Poultry Farmers in Kano Have Expressed Fear That the Dreaded Avian Influenza, Popularly Known As Bird Flu, May Re-Emerge in Kano Even As the Kano State Government Began the Payment of Compensation to Farmers Affected By the Disaster Last Year.

The chairman of Kano state Poultry Farmers Association, Alhaji Muhammed Aminu Adamu, disclosed this to Daily Trust yesterday at his farm in Dawakin Tofa.

He said that already a member of the poultry association in Kano has reported the outbreak of the disease in his farm located at the outskirt of Kano municipality.

He stated that last year, members of the association in Kano lost over 300,000 chickens to the disease and the federal government is yet to compensate them fully.

Alhaji Aminu who is also the managing director and chairman of Nana Farms said the federal government decided to compensate Kano poultry farmers for the chickens slaughtered by its officials, but will not compensate them for those dead or killed by the disease.

"Even before they came to my farm, I had over 10,000 chickens killed by the disease and they even assisted in getting them out of the farm, yet they said they could only pay me for those they killed themselves. This is unfortunate because the loss is huge to us poultry farmers," Alhaji Aminu posited.

He state that what poultry farmers have been doing now to protect their farms against the bird flu and other poultry disease is to institute precautionary measures. Since the news of the current outbreak in one of the farms was reported by its members, he added, members of the association have embarked on sanitation and disinfectation of all visitors to the farms either on business or casual visit.

"We have now made it a policy not to admit anyone into our farms unless on very important visit, like you journalist. That is why you were sprayed with disinfectant chemical before coming in. We cannot risk another bird flu epidemic after what we went through early this year," he maintained.

He disclosed that he lost over 23,000 birds to the disease last time and his members have been attending many seminars and workshops on how to protect their poultries against such disease in future.
