Four Poultry Farms Affected By Bird Flu In Jos

An outbreak of avian influenza (Bird Flu) has been confirmed in four poultry farms within parts of Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The veterinary services department in the state confirmed the outbreak after results of tests carried out at the affected farms returned positive for the virus.

The resurfacing of the avian influenza virus otherwise known as bird flu in Plateau State has left poultry farmers counting their losses as the virus spreads across poultry farms in the state.

The poultry disease, which had in the past ruined many poultry businesses had abated as the state did not record any outbreak since 2019 but the resurgence of the virus, is now causing panic among poultry farmers.

Arewa Voice counted five farms in the state which have been hit by the outbreak, with owners claiming they have lost thousands of birds in the process. Battling with high the cost of maintaining their farms amidst the economic downturn occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, poultry farmers said they are being threatened with the presence of the highly virulent strain of the disease....

Bird flu: FG destroys over 329,000 chickens in 62 farms

The federal government has destroyed over 329,000 birds across 62 farms following the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) which has continued to wreak havoc on farms across the country since the first reported case on January 29.

From January to 5th April, 421,947 birds were exposed to the H5N1 disease while 92,422 birds have died of the disease, which now spreads to 20 local government areas across eight states.

Reliable information from the ministry indicated that as of 9th April, the ministry has depopulated about 329,556 birds across the 62 farms.

Dr. Adeniran Alabi, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Federations and Director of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said for two years, the country didn?t record any outbreak until on January 29 when it confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State...

Avian Influenza that attacks birds and livestock was confirmed in Katsina on Tuesday.

Governor Aminu Masari?s Special Adviser on livestock and Grazing Reserves, Dr Lawal Bagiwa, made the confirmation while speaking with journalists.

The Chairman, Technical Committee on the Control of Avian Influenza, Alhaji Samaila Burga, said the Bauchi Government has killed about 27,000 birds to curtail the spread of Bird flu in the State.

Alhaji Burga said the Bird Flu, also known as Avian Influenza, broke out in Bauchi and Toro Local Government Areas of the state.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Bauchi that nine poultry farms were affected by the outbreak in the two local government areas of the state.

He said that 27,000 birds were killed in one of the poultry farms to avert its spread across the state...

Farmers count losses as Bird flu ravages Delta farms

Farmers in Delta State are counting their losses following an outbreak of Avian Influenza popularly known as bird flu in the state.
According to some of the affected farmers, birds worth millions of naira have been killed by the disease.
Mr. Andrew Unutame of Oghenejename Farms Limited, Ekrerhavwen-Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area, said their birds started dying last week as a result of the attack.
Unutame who is the Production Manager of the farm Delta decried the development, lamenting that the flu has wrecked havoc.
He said most of the farms in the state have been affected by the influenza which they had been trying to curtail in the last three months.
Unutame said over 11,000 birds, including laying birds and the ones at the point of lay, have been killed in the farm in the last three days...

A total of 164,473 birds have so far been killed by the ravaging Avian Influenza (bird flu) in farms across six local government areas of Delta State.

The Delta State Government confirmed the figure on Wednesday in Asaba at a news briefing.

Commissioner for Agriculture Julius Egbedi, addressing reporters, said the figure is conservative as most poultry farms affected by the disease were yet to officially report it.

Flanked by Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu and ministry officials, Egbedi said laboratory analysis indicated that the birds were being affected by the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1) strain.

He said the disease was first reported on June 2, adding that the ministry took samples to the Veterinary Institute in Jos for investigation where the influenza was confirmed.

According to him, farms in Udu, Sapele, Okpe, Oshimili South, Ughelli South and Ughelli North council areas have so far reported the disease.

‘At the moment, 164,473 birds have been killed by avian influenza. This is what is officially reported, there might be others.

‘We need to let our people know of this if not, it will engulf the entire state and lead to the collapse of the poultry industry,’ he said...

As poultry farmers contend with the hydra-headed challenges bedevilling the sector in recent times, a new wave of threat – Avian Influenza, popularly known as bird flu outbreak, is compounding farmers’ headache across the country.
