Ondo State has emerged as one of the worst-hit areas in the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak, recording 31 deaths within the first 11 weeks of 2026, according to data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state ranks second in fatalities, behind Taraba State, which reported 40 deaths, highlighting the growing public health concern in Ondo and other parts of the country where the disease remains endemic.

Across Nigeria, the outbreak has continued to take a toll on both the general population and frontline health workers.

A total of 146 deaths have been recorded from 582 confirmed cases, while 3,222 suspected cases were reported within the same period.

Medical personnel have been significantly affected. The National Association of Resident Doctors reported that 25 of its members had been infected, with one fatality...

Lassa fever claims 50 lives in Taraba
From John Mkom, Jalingo

Lassa fever has claimed 50 lives at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo, Taraba State, between November 2025 and March 2026.

The FMC’s Head of Clinical Service, Dr. Abubakar Kirim, on Thursday said Taraba has recorded the highest number of cases this year.

Among the challenges faced are a lack of awareness about prevention measures, an acute shortage of medical doctors, and rising cases due to the locals’ exposure to the disease’s carriers, like rodents, particularly mice.

As of the time of filing this report, 226 suspected cases have been admitted, 95 lab-confirmed, while the death toll stands at 50...

Nigeria’s ongoing Lassa fever outbreak is showing a worrying rise in deaths, with new figures from treatment centres and national surveillance pointing not just to wider transmission, but a deepening fatality burden across several states.

Latest figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) show that the country has recorded over 500 confirmed cases and 146 deaths from Lassa fever between January and mid-March.

The NCDC also reports that at least 38 healthcare workers have been infected in the current outbreak, with at least three deaths recorded — a pattern experts said reflects both occupational exposure and weaknesses in infection prevention systems.

The report shows that the case fatality rate (CFR) stands at 25.1 per cent, significantly higher than the 18.7 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025, indicating that a greater proportion of infected patients are dying despite ongoing response efforts...

Decline in cases

According to the NCDC, confirmed cases dropped from 29 recorded in Epidemiological Week 16 to nine cases in Week 17.

The new infections were reported in Ondo and Bauchi states.

The agency said 23 states have recorded at least one confirmed case this year across 105 local government areas.

They added that 84 per cent of all confirmed cases were reported from five states—Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo.

The predominant age group affected is 21–30 years.

The agency also said no new healthcare worker infection was recorded during the reporting week...

Nigeria has recorded 214 deaths from Lassa fever in 2026, as the case fatality rate rose sharply to 25 per cent, deepening concerns over the worsening impact of the outbreak across the country, according to fresh data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The agency’s latest situation report showed that the viral haemorrhagic disease has continued to spread across multiple regions, with 855 confirmed cases emerging from 5,652 suspected infections recorded in 23 states and 109 local government areas.

Lassa fever, which is endemic in Nigeria, is transmitted mainly through contact with food or household items contaminated by urine or faeces of infected rodents. Health officials also warn that human-to-human transmission can occur, particularly in healthcare environments where infection prevention practices are inadequate.

The report indicated that infections remain heavily concentrated in a few states, with Ondo accounting for 28 per cent of confirmed cases. Bauchi followed with 25 per cent, Taraba 15 per cent, Edo 10 per cent, while Benue recorded six per cent. The remaining 16 per cent were distributed across 18 other states.

Overall, about 84 per cent of confirmed infections were recorded in just five states, underscoring persistent hotspots sustaining transmission of the disease...
