Nigeria records 39 mpox cases

August 16, 2024

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says Nigeria has recorded a total of 39 confirmed cases of mpox and zero deaths across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory this year.

He also said the country has so far recorded a total of 5,951 suspected cholera cases and 176 deaths across 36 states, and the FCT as of August 11, 2024...

...In Nigeria, a total of 39 confirmed cases and zero deaths have been recorded across 33 States + FCT, from the beginning of the year 2024.

The states are: Bayelsa (five), Cross River (five), Ogun (four), Lagos (four), Ondo (three), and Ebonyi (three).

Idris said the press conference is part of efforts to intensify coordination and communication with stakeholders to manage the spread of the virus and prevent disease importation, considering the ease of cross-border transmission.

The NCDC DG noted that the National Mpox Technical Working Group, a multi-sectoral body housed within the NCDC, continues to coordinate Mpox response activities.

“Some states have also been put on high alert including Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Kano, Rivers, Cross-River, Akwa-Ibom, Adamawa, and Taraba. We are also conducting contact tracing and monitoring for confirmed cases to prevent further spread. This will now also include a declaration by travellers who have been to any of the countries where there has been an ongoing outbreak of mpox in the last 90 days,” he said...

A dose of MPOX vaccine.

August 28, 2024 Health Nigeria yesterday Tuesday received 10,000 doses of MPOX (monkey pox) vaccines, becoming the first African country to receive doses to respond to the outbreak of the viral disease that has affected several countries and led to the declaration of a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The vaccines, Jynneos (MVA), manufactured by pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic, were donated by the United States government. The vaccines will be rolled out in five states with the highest number of MPOS cases.

They will be administered in two doses to 5,000 people at highest risk of MPOS, including close contacts of MPOS cases and frontline healthcare workers, with a provision for reactive vaccination in other states if the need arises.

More than 3,500 laboratory-confirmed cases including 26 deaths in Africa

To prepare for the vaccine rollout, Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued an emergency use authorization for the MPOX vaccine. Health authorities have also taken steps to preposition vaccines to reach priority populations.

“The delivery of smallpox vaccines to Nigeria is not only a vital complement to ongoing measures to stop the virus and protect health, but also a clear demonstration of international solidarity in the face of global health emergencies,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

Nigeria has been reporting cases of MPOX for several years, peaking in 2022. As of August 10, 2024, the West African country had 786 suspected cases, 39 confirmed cases, and no deaths since the beginning of the year.

Elsewhere on the rest of the continent, 12 countries have reported cases. In total, more than 15,000 suspected cases have been reported since the beginning of the year. Of these, more than 3,500 cases have been laboratory-confirmed, including 26 deaths.

A new test for vaccine equity

The UN World Health Agency is working with national authorities and partners to strengthen response measures in affected countries and scale up preparedness in countries that have not yet reported cases.

There are currently serious gaps in access to MPOX vaccine, particularly in Africa. WHO is working with countries and manufacturers to improve access to vaccines. The
WHO Director-General has initiated the process of listing vaccines for emergency use to accelerate access to vaccines, particularly for low-income countries.

WHO is also working with partners such as GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance and the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF ) to enable countries with existing stocks to donate. The partners are setting up a donation system so that limited vaccines are used where they have the greatest impact on public health.
