Nigerian Govt warns of impending Lassa fever surge

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has warned of a looming surge in cases of Lassa fever in the country.

The Director General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, gave the warning at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, saying that although the country had experienced a decline in cases of various diseases, it is approaching the Lassa fever season, which typically occurs annually.

“Given the seasonal nature of Lassa fever, we anticipate a potential increase in cases over the next few months.

“As such, we are proactively intensifying our preparedness efforts to mitigate the impact of the expected surge,” he said.

According to him, the country had reported 7,973 suspected Lassa fever cases, with 982 confirmed cases and 168 deaths, resulting in a 17.1 percent case fatality rate....

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) attributes the rise in fatalities caused by Lassa fever to delays in seeking medical attention by infected individuals.

NCDC, its latest situation report on the disease, said late presentation of cases is leading to an increase in the case fatality rate of Lassa fever.

The report, issued on Wednesday, also links the rise in death cases to a country-wide poor health-seeking behaviour resulting from what it described as the high cost of treatment and clinical management of Lassa fever.

The report reads in part: “Late presentation of cases leading to an increase in CFR. Poor health-seeking behaviour due to the high cost of treatment and clinical management of Lassa fever and poor environmental sanitation conditions observed in high-burden communities”.​..

Nigeria has reported 170 Lassa fever-related death cases between January and September 2024.

NCDC puts the case fatality rate of the disease for this year at 16.9 per cent, the same as recorded within the same period in 2023.

In its recent situation report, the agency disclosed that 115 suspected cases of the disease were reported in Edo, Ondo, and Enugu states last week, out of which five cases were confirmed and a death recorded.

This raises the total confirmed cases from 1000 to 1005 and death cases from 169 to 170. Currently, 8251 suspected cases of Lassa fever have now been recorded.

According to NCDC, 67 per cent of all confirmed Lassa fever cases that have been reported are from Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states while the remaining 33 per cent is reported from 25 states.

“The predominant age group affected is 31-40 years. Also, the number of suspected cases increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2023,” the report noted.​..

​The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 1,018 confirmed cases of Lassa fever out of the 8,411 suspected cases from January 1 to September 29, 2024, in 28 states across 128 local government areas nationwide.

The centre also recorded 172 deaths with a Case Fatality Rate of 16.9 per cent.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has called for public caution after a surge in Lassa fever cases in Ondo and Edo states.

The NCDC reported nine new infections in both states during week 39 of 2024, marking an increase in the previous week’s four confirmed cases and bringing the total number of cases this year to over 1,018 across 28 states.

According to the NCDC’s latest Lassa Fever Situation Report, the new cases raise concerns about the spread of the virus, particularly in the two states that have consistently accounted for the majority of infections. Ondo and Edo, along with Bauchi, have collectively contributed to 68 per cent of the total confirmed cases in 2024. The agency also noted a slight increase in the case fatality rate (CFR), now standing at 16.9 per cent, compared to 16.8 per cent during the same period in 2023.

The NCDC attributes the rise in fatalities to the late presentation of cases, poor health-seeking behaviour and inadequate environmental sanitation in high-burden communities. Joseph Okoeguale, a medical doctor and director of Viral and Emergent Pathogens, Control and Research, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State, said Edo recorded 240 cases of Lassa fever and 21 deaths between last December and March this year.

Mr Okoeguale stated this during the first edition of the College of Medical Science’s Lecture Series organised by the Edo State University, Uzairue, on Monday.

​MAKURDI – Benue State Government, has declared that it has recorded sixty-three confirmed cases of Lassa Fever in 2024 alone, adding that it also recorded 11 fatalities, representing an overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 17 percent since the beginning of the year.

The State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Yanmar Ortese, who disclosed this while declaring open the Lassa Fever Case Management workshop held in Makurdi, on Monday, also said 8 healthcare workers were affected in the course of duty this year.​..

The Ebonyi State Government, on Thursday, said that 394 suspected cases of Lassa fever have been recorded since January till December in the state.

The government said 48 cases were confirmed from the suspected case and out of which 23 people died of the disease while 25 were discharged...

​The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced that it has intensified its response to the ongoing Lassa Fever outbreak, with Nigeria recording 190 deaths from 1,154 confirmed cases in 2024.

The Director General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, while briefing the media on Monday about the Lassa Fever update, preparedness, and response measures by the agency, disclosed that Nigeria has recorded 9,492 suspected cases, 1,154 confirmed cases, and 190 deaths this year alone.​..

NCDC confirms 54 Lassa fever cases, 10 deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 54 confirmed cases of Lassa fever out of the 196 suspected cases from December 30, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

The NCDC also recorded 10 deaths with a Case Fatality Rate of 18.5 per cent.

According to the Lassa fever situation report obtained from the NCDC on Saturday, the cases cut across six states and 20 local government areas of the country.

The report read partly, “In week 1, the number of new confirmed cases decreased from 70 in epi week 52, of 2024 to 54. These were reported in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Kogi States.​..
