Lagos warns residents on Cholera outbreak, records five deaths

The Lagos State Government has called for heightened vigilance and adoption of precautionary measures as the state records cholera outbreak resulting in five fatalities.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Tuesday, warned that the state had recorded an excess report of severe gastroenteritis cases in the last 48 hours.

Speaking on the surveillance reports, Abayomi disclosed that cases of severe gastroenteritis have been reported in communities around Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Kosofe Local Government Area of the state.​..

​The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned of a growing trend of cholera cases across the country, with 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cases reported in the past six months, resulting in 30 deaths.

According to the NCDC, the states most affected by the outbreak include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos.

“The time between infection and the appearance of symptoms is two hours to five days. It has a higher risk of transmission in areas that lack adequate sanitation facilities and a regular supply of clean water, it said.​..

​The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, said that the number of recorded fatalities as a result of Cholera outbreak in the state, has risen to 21, following the last update which reported 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities.

She also said the number of cholera cases has increased to 401 across Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recording the highest numbers.

Dr. Ogunyemi revealed this on Thursday while providing an update on the outbreak, after meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC).

She added that the death toll has also risen to 21, an increase of six from the previously reported 15 fatalities.

According to her, the rise in cases was anticipated following the Ileya festivities, during which large gatherings occurred.​

Cholera: 1528 suspected cases, 53 deaths recorded – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, says 53 deaths and 1,528 suspected cases cholera have been recorded across 31 states and 107 local government areas with a case fatality rate of 3.5% since the beginning of this year.

Director General of NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed this, Monday, while providing an update on the cholera epidemiological situation in Nigeria and ongoing prevention and response efforts at the national and subnational levels.

He expressed fears that the situation may be compounded as the rainy season intensifies.

To this effect, the nation’s disease response agency’s boss said a National Cholera Emergency Operation Centre has been activated.​..

Lagos state government has disclosed that the total number of cholera cases has increased to 579, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa Local Government Areas (LGAs) recording the highest numbers.

The death toll has also risen to 29, an increase of five from the previously reported 24 fatalities.

The Lagos state commissioner for Health, prof. The Ogun State government on Monday announced a cholera outbreak in the state, with 25 cases in seven local government areas and a casualty in the Ijebu North.

At a press briefing at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre in Abeokuta, the state Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, said nine of the 25 cases have been confirmed, but 16 others are still under close monitoring.

Ms Coker said the state government was prepared to curb the spread and protect residents’ lives and health.

The commissioner said the ministry had received an alert about the first two cases on June 12, which, according to her, tested positive with a cholera rapid diagnostic kit.​..

The Lagos State government on Sunday disclosed that 25 cases of severe gastroenteritis occurred at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison, confirmed to be caused by cholera.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, while giving update of outbreak of cholera in the state, added that urgent med­ical and environmental interven­tion measures had been imple­mented with success.

“We were able to supply Kiriki­ri medium prison with intrave­nous fluids, infection prevention and other health consumables.

“Additionally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals which have been delivered to the prison to support prison health facilities with prevention strat­egies for about 3,200 inmates if required.

“Immediate water and sanita­tion issues have been corrected and there is ongoing inspections of other correctional facilities in the state ” the commissioner said.

Addressing the source of the original outbreak two weeks ago, Abayomi disclosed that it has been traced to unregulated street beverages and contaminated wa­ter supply. ...

2 prison inmates die of cholera in Lagos

Two persons were confirmed dead and five were hospitalised due to cholera in Badagry.

The Medical Director of the General Hospital, Badagry, Olatunde Bakare, to stated Thursday that victims were brought to the hospital by some officials of the correctional centre in the tow....

Mr Bakare said six inmates of the centre were brought to the hospital on 9 July, at about 7.00.p.m.

He said one of the inmates was brought in dead while the other died the following morning in the hospital.

Cholera: Death toll hits 103 as Nigeria records 3,623 cases in 34 states, FCT

Even as Nigeria intensifies its response to the cholera outbreak in the country, the disease has claimed a total of 103 lives out of the 3,623 cases recorded so far in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, which disclosed the new casualty figure at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, said the figure cut across
187 local government areas, with a cumulative case fatality rate of 2.8 per cent since the beginning of the year.

The event was aimed at providing an update on the ongoing cholera outbreak situation in Nigeria including the prevention and response efforts at the national and sub-national levels, as well as some other epidemic-prone diseases, especially known to be on the rise during rainy seasons.

Director General of NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, who spoke at the event, hinted that the predominant age affected is five years old while males account for 52 per cent of cases and females account for the rest.

“As of July 15, 2024, we have recorded 3,623 suspected cases and, unfortunately, 103 deaths across 34 states plus the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and 187 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with a cumulative case fatality rate of 2.8% since the beginning of the year. The predominant age affected is 5 years old while males account for 52% of cases and females account for the rest.

“Furthermore, there was a 5.6% decline in the number of cases in this reporting week (8th -14th July) as compared to the preceding week. We also recorded a drop in the case fatality rate from 2.9% to 2.8%. There is a decline in case fatality rate from week 24 when the spike started to the present week. Whereas ongoing efforts at the national and some state levels might have yielded some results and are largely responsible for the decline being reported, given the trend from previous years, we know it is not uhuru yet.​...

Imported vaccine lingers as cholera cases hit 4,809

The number of suspected cholera cases in Nigeria has risen to 4,809 across 35 states, and 192 local government areas as of July 21, 2024.

The country also recorded 156 deaths with a fatality rate of 3.2 per cent since the beginning of the year.

This is according to the week 29 cholera situation report obtained exclusively from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday.

This was as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, said Nigeria will receive cholera vaccines from the Global Vaccine Alliance in a few weeks and they will be utilised in hotspot areas.​..

The Federal Government through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that 1,142 new suspected Cholera cases and 20 additional patients have died across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

NCDC added that the new records increased cholera death toll 176 from 156 and the suspected cases from 4,809 to 5,951.

Aside from that, the agency noted that one death was recorded as of August 20, 2024 but the circumstances surrounding the demise was yet to be ascertained by medical experts.

In a chart released by NCDC on Tuesday through its official social media handle, 121 new cases were discovered, a reduction from previous records in July.​..

The Ministry of Health in Edo State on Thursday declared a cholera outbreak in the state, confirming six cases of the disease so far.

Stephenson Ojeifo, director, public health in the ministry, announced this during a news conference in Benin.

Mr Ojeifo, a medical doctor, said that the six confirmed cases were identified among the 40 suspected cholera cases recorded to date in the state.

“We sent 23 suspected samples that tested positive to the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja for confirmatory test.

“We also have three suspected samples that tested negative to RDT but with obvious clinical signs and symptoms.

“The total number of samples sent to the national reference laboratory for confirmatory testing are 26.

“As of Tuesday this week, we received 15 results out of which six were confirmed positive to cholera and we are still expecting some outstanding results,” he said...

It also stated that the outbreak had resulted in the deaths of four persons, while 36 others affected by the outbreak were receiving treatment in various hospitals in the area.

The Chairman of the council, Jibrin Ibrahim, announced this to newsmen during his visit to the victims at the Infectious Disease Centre, Yola, on Sunday.

No less than 10 persons have been disclosed to have died in the wake of the cholera outbreak which hit Adamawa State.

Arewa PUNCH reports that on Monday, a medical official at the specialist hospital made the disclosure that a total of 10 victims who suffered from the cholera outbreak have died.

Earlier on Sunday, the Chairman of Yola-North Local Government Area, Mr. Jibril Ibrahim had confirmed four deaths and 40 recorded cases.

Ibrahim said, “The total number of confirmed cases now stand at 40, with four fatalities.”

Speaking with Arewa PUNCH on Monday, a medical doctor who sought anonymity because he is not officially authorised to speak on the issue with the media disclosed that between Saturday and Monday, 10 deaths had been recorded with 76 cases already confirmed.​..

​The Borno State Government has said that the North-Eastern State has receorded 40 suspected cases of cholera, just as it confirms a full-blown cholera infection of two persons.

Baba Mallam Gana, a Professor and Commissioner for Health stated this on Monday in Maiduguri while flagging off integrated oral cholera and measles vaccination as well as vitamin A supplementation.
