Following a report, on Sunday, by the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) that a person in England had been diagnosed with Monkeypox, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed circulation of the disease with 558 cases and eight deaths in 32 states of the federation.

The UKHSA said the patient had recently travelled from Nigeria. It said the person is receiving care at the Infectious Disease Unit of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection, which kills one in every 10 patients, but does not spread swiftly. An epidemiological summary on the ailment published, yesterday, by the NCDC, pointed out that since September 2017, Nigeria has continued to report sporadic cases of the disease, with a National Technical Working Group (TWG) monitoring infections and strengthening preparedness/response capacity.

The centre said 46 suspected infections were reported between January 1 and April 30 this year in addition to 15 confirmed cases from seven states –Adamawa (three), Lagos (three), Cross River (two), Abuja (two), Kano (two), Delta (two) and Imo (one) – but no death had been recorded.

The NCDC said 10 new suspected cases in April were reported from seven states – Bayelsa (three), Lagos (two), Kano (one), FCT (one), Delta (one), Edo (one) and Ogun (one).

The five new positive cases in the month were confirmed from four states – Lagos (two), FCT (one), Kano (one) and Delta (one).
From September 2017 to April 30, 2022, a total of 558 suspected cases were reported from 32 states.

It noted that of the reported cases, 241 (43.2 per cent) have been confirmed in 22 states – Rivers (52), Bayelsa (43), Lagos (33), Delta (31), Cross River (16), Edo (10), Imo (nine), Akwa Ibom (seven), Oyo (six), FCT (eight), Enugu (four), Abia (three), Plateau (three), Adamawa (three), Nasarawa (two), Benue (two), Anambra (two), Ekiti (two), Kano (two), Ebonyi (one), Niger (one) and Ogun (one).

The NCDC said eight deaths have been recorded with Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 3.3 per cent in six states – namely Edo (two), Lagos (two), Imo (one), Cross River (one), FCT (one) and Rivers (one) – from September 2017 to April 30, 2022.

Meanwhile, the UKHSA confirmed case is the seventh in Britain. The disease was first detected in the UK in 2018 after another traveller brought the virus back from Nigeria and spread to two other people, including one NHS nurse, who caught it from bed linen...

Monkeypox: NCDC DG Asks Nigerians To Avoid Bushmeat

Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Ifedayo Adetifa has admonished Nigerians to avoid bushmeat to prevent monkeypox.

“The greatest risk to health security and health in general we should be careful in handling bushmeat and the likes, even rats.

“It’s part of the problem we have with Lassa Fever, we are not managing our interaction with rats. We are not storing our foods and other things properly to avoid contamination by these animals.

“In case of monkeypox, people interact with bushmeat and other animals and the question about animals is that we know about monkeys, sort of bushmeats are involved as well. So, I think all of them should be handled with care.

“There is no outbreak of monkeypox. The term outbreak is being used wrongly. Yes, we are having cases of monkeypox, just like we have continued to have monkeypox cases since it reemerged in 2017.

“Since 2017 till date, we have had about 558 monkeypox cases with about eight deaths. This year alone, we have had 46 suspected cases reported and about eight cases confirmed with no death.”

Nigeria confirms 21 monkeypox cases

LAGOS — Nigeria has recorded 21 confirmed monkeypox cases across nine states and one death since January 2022, said the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) late on Sunday, May 29.

In a report released by the NCDC, the health agency said the country has recorded 66 suspected monkeypox cases across more than 20 states this year, and Nigeria’s “risk of exposure to the monkeypox virus was high based on the recent risk assessment conducted.”

The report said the one death of the confirmed cases was reported in a 40-year-old patient who had underlying co-morbidity and was on immunosuppressive medications.

A rapid increase of suspected cases was recorded in May, when there were 20 new suspected cases from 11 states, a 100 percent increase in case reporting as compared with April, when 10 new cases were reported, said the report.

It is “likely due to ongoing efforts to increase awareness and improve surveillance”, it said, adding the NCDC has activated a national multisectoral emergency operations center for monkeypox to strengthen and coordinate ongoing response activities in-country while contributing to the global response...

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said 31 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the country.

The NCDC disclosed this in its latest monkeypox situation report released on Friday.

The agency said between January 1 and June 5, 2022, the disease has been confirmed in 12 states, including the FCT...

Monkeypox cases rise to 36 in Nigeria

LAGOS, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Confirmed cases of monkeypox in Nigeria have risen to 36 this year as more cases were reported across the most populous African country, a report by health authorise said.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control(NCDC) reported in its latest monkeypox situation report the country has recorded 141 suspected cases and 36 confirmed cases from 15 states since January.

The report said a monkeypox national emergency operations center was set up in May after a risk assessment showed that Nigeria was at high risk for an outbreak...

The Adamawa State director of Public Health, Dr. Celine Laori, said, there has been an outbreak of monkeypox in Adamawa state.

Dr. Laori said, there have been as at 12th June, 2022, five laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox in Adamawa state and another 57 suspected cases of the disease in Adamawa.

This was made known by the Adamawa state Director of Public Health, Dr. Celine Laori, in an exclusive chat with Daily Sun in Yola, Adamawa state.

Dr. Celine said, the monkeypox was first notice sometimes between late April and early May at Army barracks and later on at the Yola correctional facility. She explained that, so far the disease has been noticed in two local governments of Yola north and Yola South.

According to Celine Laori, “Yes there has been an outbreak of Monkeypox in the state which was registered in late April by the Honourable Commissioner of Health, almost at the time when he was declaring the end of cholera response.

“There was a case that was picked up in the army barracks then. if you pick up one case, it is enough to declare an outbreak.

“Subsequently there was also an outbreak at the correctional facility in Jimeta. Few other cases were picked up from other place.

“But so far, there have been fifty seven (57) suspected cases reported at present and we have about five (5) laboratory confirmed cases as at 12th June 2022 and the cases affect two local governments which are Yola north and Yola South but no mortality has been recorded yet.”...

Lagos, Adamawa, and Delta States have been reported to have recorded more cases of monkeypox than others after the number of suspected cases hits 141 in the country.

The number increased to 141 after no fewer than 31 new suspected cases were reported from June 6 -12, 2022, in 13 states across the country.

From the news cases, Lagos recorded 5 cases, Katsina, Ondo, and Bayelsa had 4 cases each while Nasarawa and Ogun recorded 3 cases.

Also, in Oyo state, two cases of monkeypox were recorded while Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo Kaduna, Kano, and Imo states all had one case each.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed the statistics on Friday while announcing efforts made to break the transmission chain across the country.

“From January 1st to 12th June 2022, there have been 141 suspected cases in total and 36 confirmed cases from fifteen (15) states – Lagos (7), Adamawa (5), Delta (3), River (3), Cross River (2), FCT (2), Kano (2), Bayelsa (2), Edo (2), Imo (2), Plateau (2), Nasarawa (1), Niger (1), Oyo (1) and Ondo (1).

One dies as Nigeria records 41 cases of monkeypox

One person has died of monkeypox, according to Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), with 41 confirmed cases in the country this year.

He revealed this on Monday in Abuja during the Federal Ministry of Health’s bi-weekly COVID-19 update.

In comparison to other countries, he claims, there has been no evidence of any new or unusual virus transmission or changes in its clinical manifestation in Nigeria.

He explained, “No death had been recorded from COVID-19 in the last five weeks.”...

Kwara records first case of Monkeypox

Kwara State Government has confirmed the first case of monkey pox in the state.

The confirmed case, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Raji Razaq, followed rigorous efforts of the Surveillance and Response Team that had been activated since the index case was reported in the country in March, 2022.

He said the first confirmed case in Kwara State involves a 29-year-old Nigerian driver who developed symptoms of fever, generalised rash, and weakness in the last two weeks and had been under the surveillance of the ministry of health

He added that there were contacts with the wife and four neighbours with similar symptoms where he lives at Gbugbu in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, all of which have been resolved by the health team.

The patient has been on admission in the last one week because of suspicion of monkey pox. He has also been under strict monitoring by the surveillance and clinical team...

LAGOS — Confirmed cases of monkeypox in Nigeria could reach their highest level in five years if the current trend of infections is maintained, the head of the country’s center for disease control said on Tuesday.

Nigeria is one of the countries in Africa where monkeypox is endemic. Monkeypox occurs when a person comes in contact with the virus from another person, animal or contaminated materials.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has disclosed that between January and June, the country has recorded a total of 204 suspected Monkeypox, MPX, cases out of which 62 cases were confirmed to be positive.

Disclosing these during a Virtual media dialogue on Monkeypox titled:”Monkeypox Spread, Infodemic and Public Health Response in Nigeria.”, the Incident Manager, National Monkeypox Emergency Operations Centre, Dr Lateefat Amao, said between 2017 and June 2022, that about 25 States have recorded cases of Monkeypox in Nigeria.

She said: “Monkeypox is endemic in some of Nigeria. The epidemic has been mostly stable over the last five years since the resurgence. Some progress has been made in improving, prevention, detection and response.

“However, obvious challenges and gaps remain. There is a need for sustained MPX preparedness and response efforts with the support of all stakeholders and partners.

Detailing the sequence of the distribution and test positivity rate of MPX over the last five years, Amao said: “In 2017 there were 198 suspected cases whereas 88 cases were confirmed and test positivity rate, TPR % was 44.4....

Katsina Confirms Case Of Monkeypox, Says Patient Treated, Discharged

The state Commissioner of Health, Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, disclosed this on Tuesday while flagging off the distribution of free medicare medicines and commissioning of emergency operations call centre at the State Primary Healthcare Agency office.

“We have confirmed one case of monkeypox in the state and all measures were taken to ensure that the patient was well treated. The person has been discharged to his family.

“We have 15 other suspected cases and their samples have been taken to the national laboratory Abuja and their results are expected hopefully within the week,” he said.

Monkeypox: Nasarawa records 6 cases as health ministry cautions residents on environmental hygiene

The Nasarawa State Government says it has confirmed six cases of the monkeypox outbreak in two Local Government Areas of the state, Lafia and Keffi.

Pharm. Ahmed Yahaya, the State Commissioner for Health disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Lafia.

The commissioner explained that two cases were first reported in Keffi Local government in May and another four cases reported in Lafia.
