No fewer than 27 new cases of Circulating Mutant Poliovirus Type 2 have been reported in Nigeria in 2022.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative disclosed this in a report obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday.

According to the report, the country has also reported three cVDPV2 positive environmental samples from Kano, Borno, and Gombe States.

Meanwhile, experts say the report is not a major threat to the nation’s wild polio-free status. The Federal Government has announced the detection of 130 cases of Circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (cVPV2), otherwise known as polio type 2, in 47 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 16 states of the federation.

Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, disclosed this, yesterday, at the quarterly meeting of Northern Traditional Leaders’Committee (NTLC) on Primary HealthCare Centres (PHCs) in Abuja.

He, however, said the figure was a 82 per cent reduction compared to what was recorded within same period in 2021 when there were 711 cVPV2 cases.

He said Sokoto and Zamfara states were witnessing breakthrough transmissions and that efforts were being made to control the transmission with the government conducting polio outbreak response campaigns...

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says 51 new cases of circulating variant poliovirus (cVPV2) have been recorded in Nigeria from January to August 2023.

Walter Mulombo, the WHO country representative in Nigeria, who spoke in Kaduna on Thursday, said 47 of the 51 cases were recorded in the north-west.​..
