LAGOS – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that Lassa fever has claimed no fewer than 158 lives in 24 states since the start of this year.

The NCDC, in its situation report on Monday, said the cases were recorded across 99 local government areas.

It said of all confirmed cases, 68 percent were from Ondo; Edo, 25 percent, and Bauchi, 14 percent.

“The predominant age-group affected is 21-30 years (range: 1 to 90 years, median age: 30 years). The male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.9,” the report stated.

“Cumulatively from week 1 to week 24, 2022, 158 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 19.8 percent which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 (20.5 percent).

For epidemiological week 24, the NCDC said the number of new confirmed cases increased from seven in week 23 to eight cases. These were reported from Ondo, Edo and Plateau states...

Lassa fever confirmed cases in Nigeria have jumped to 889 and 168 people have so far died from the disease, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The NCDC revealed this in its latest Lassa fever situation report for week 32 spanning from August 8-14, 2022.

The agency also said so far in 2022, 25 states had recorded at least one confirmed case across 101 local government areas.

Lassa fever spreads to 101 LGs, kills 169
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has recorded a total of 899 cases of Lassa fever from 25 states across 101 local government areas in the country.

The cases were reported between January 1, 2022, and August 28, 2022.

According to the situation report obtained by our correspondent on Monday, a total of 6,471 suspected cases and 169 deaths have been recorded from the disease so far. Lassa fever is both an acute viral illness and a viral haemorrhagic fever. The causative agent is a single-stranded RNA virus in the family Arenaviridae, the Lassa virus. This zoonotic disease is associated with high morbidity and mortality, and it has both economic and health security consequences.

Lassa fever presents symptoms and signs similar to those of many febrile illnesses, thus making it difficult to diagnose clinically. The incubation period is between 6 and 21 days. It causes a syndrome characterised by fever, muscle aches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, chest, and abdominal pain.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 10 additional Lassa fever infections from threes states of the federation.

The new infections, according to the latest situation report published on the website of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for week 35 of 2022, were reported by Ondo, Edo and Nasarawa states between 29 August to 4 September.

The report further revealed that a total of 170 deaths have been recorded in 2022 across 101 local government areas in 25 states.

It noted that the fatalities represent a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.7 per cent which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 at 22.7 per cent...

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) recorded eight additional Lassa fever infections and one death between September 5 and 11, 2022.

The NCDC, via its official website, said the new cases bring the total confirmed cases and deaths in the country to 917 and 171, respectively.

It disclosed that 25 states had recorded at least one confirmed case across 102 local government areas.

According to NCDC, 6,660 suspected cases have been reported in the country.

The public health agency disclosed that of the new confirmed cases, Ondo accounted for 32 per cent, Edo 26 per cent and Bauchi 13 per cent.

“In week 36 (September 5 to 11, 2022), the number of new confirmed cases decreased from 10 in week 35, 2022 to 8 cases. These were reported from Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, and Anambra states.

“Cumulatively from week 1 to week 36, 2022, 171 deaths have been reported with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.6 people, which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 (23.3 per cent).

“The predominant age group affected is 21-30 years (Range: 0 to 90 years, Median Age: 30 years). The male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.8.

“The number of suspected cases has increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2021. No new healthcare worker affected in the reporting week 36,” it said...

Lassa fever has killed 171 persons in Nigeria since January, the latest data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) showed today.

The data, released for week 37 this year, revealed stagnation in deaths, though with an additional 70 suspected and six confirmed cases from the previous week.

From the data, The ICIR reports that the disease has killed twice the number of people who died from it within the same period last year.

Since January, there have been 6,732 suspected and 923 confirmed cases of the disease, from which 171 have died.

Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders has called on community leaders to always ensure that their environments are clean with all pits closed to avoid Lassa fever spreading in their area.

According to MSF, prevention and early detection of Lassa fever are key to saving lives and also charged the masses to always re-wash their fruits with soap, and running water to avoid contamination of the virus.

The International Medical Organisation through its Ebonyi state Project coordinator, Elton Mbofana, disclosed this on Tuesday, while briefing journalists in Abakaliki.

According to Mbofana, about 38per cent of 54 patients treated in the state this year 2022 died in observation before their results came out due to late presentation...

From week 1 to 42 of 2022 (ending 23 October), a total of 985 Lassa fever cases including 948 confirmed, 37 probable and 173 deaths among confirmed cases have been reported with a case fatality ratio (CFR) of 18% across 26 States. In week 42, seven new confirmed cases were reported from Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi and Cross River States. In total, 7 077 cases are suspected in 2022. Of all confirmed cases, 771% are from Ondo (33%), Edo (25%), and Bauchi (13%) States.

Authorities in Bauchi say there has been an upsurge in deaths and infections caused by the Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

No fewer than 16 deaths and 130 infections have been confirmed since January, the state Commissioner for Health, Sabi’u Gwalabe, disclosed on Friday.

He was briefing reporters at the end of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Friday in Bauchi.

Mr Gwadabe added that the cases were higher than the previous ones.

“We have had some outbreaks, especially when we discussed the Lassa fever outbreak during the council meeting.

“This year, we had a higher number of Lassa fever suspected cases, 16 deaths and 130 confirmed cases.

“The mortality rate is 12.4 per cent but even though it’s dropping, there are some parts of the state which are affected more than others,” he said.

He listed the areas worst hit by the disease to include Alkaleri, Kirfi, Bauchi and Tafawa Balewa...

ABUJA, (CAJ News) – AT least 176 people have died from the rising outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria this year.

This is one death less than half the number of casualties documented this time last year.

The figures provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention are for the period January 1 to October 31.

During the same period last year, 89 deaths were confirmed, from 403 cases.

This year, cases have more than doubled to 958.

A total of 26 states, out of Nigeria’s 36 states, have reported an outbreak.

This time last year, 15 states had confirmed outbreaks...

The death toll from the Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria has risen to 183, up from the previous 181, according to the latest situation report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The report obtained by our correspondent on Friday also showed that the confirmed cases are now 1,028 across 110 Local Government Areas and 27 states, as of December 11.

The 49th-week report showed that the suspected cases stood at 7,907.

Lassa fever has continued to spread in Nigeria, with 1,038 confirmed cases and 183 deaths across 111 local government areas and 27 states in the country.

This is according to the week 50 Lassa fever situation report obtained from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday.

The report, which showed that there were 7,981 suspected cases of the infection as of December 18, up from the previous 7,907, also revealed that Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states bore 75 per cent of the burden of the disease...
