Lassa Fever Kills One in Abia Community

The Abia State Government has announced the outbreak of Lassa fever in Olokoro community, Umuahia South Local Government of the state, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Health, Chief Egbulefu Eze, announced the outbreak at a news conference Tuesday and allayed fears of possible epidemic.

He said that the victim died on January 1, 2020 at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia where he was taken to, adding that it was after investigations that it was discovered that he died of Lassa fever.

“I want to report about an outbreak of lassa fever at Olokoro in Abia State,” he said, adding that it was the fourth time Abia has witnessed an Lassa fever outbreak since 1999...

Lassa fever: Ebonyi discovers three cases, enlists 102 contacts for surveillance

Ebonyi State government has identified three cases of Lassa fever and enlisted 102 contacts for surveillance following the discovery of the virus.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike disclosed this in Abakaliki while receiving a team of experts from the National Centre for Disease Control and those of the Medecins Sans Frontiers, also known as Doctors without Borders who arrived the state to lend further support to the state government in the fight against Lassa fever virus.

Receiving the teams at the Ministry’s headquarters, Centenary City,Abakaliki, Umezurike explained that at report time, the only three identified cases of the fever were receiving treatment at the virology center while 102 contacts had been enlisted for surveillance.

He said: “There was reported case of Lassa fever outbreak that happened in December, 2019, and the situation report at present is that we have three cases receiving treatment at the Virology Center...

Lessa fever hits NYSC community in Delta
20th January 2020

An isolated case of Lassa fever outbreak was recorded on Monday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, as a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was reportedly infected with the dreaded disease.

The Corps member identified as Yinka was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba when symptoms of the ailments manifested earlier in the day.

He was later transferred to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State after the virus was confirmed at Asaba FMC...

Tension is currently rising among residents of Ondo State over the outbreak of lassa fever in the state.

With 15 lives already lost and 28 currently battling for survival due to the outbreak, the state government is yet to speak on the issue.

A source at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, said score of patients have been affected by the deadly disease, disclosing that the hospital no longer have enough bed spaces for patients.

It was also gathered that one of those were said to have been killed by the disease was the pregnant wife of one of the doctors in the hospital...

Scientists raise hope for eradication of dengue, malaria, others
Lassa fever has killed 14 persons, infected 82 others in seven states and 13 councils in the country. The states include Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi and Ogun.

According to latest figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), tagged Lassa fever Situation Report Epi Week 02: 06 – 12 January 2020, the number of new confirmed cases for the same period in 2019 was 60.

The NCDC report released yesterday showed the number of deaths decreased from 16 for the same period in 2019 to 14 and the overall case fatality rate (CFR) for 2020 is (17.1 per cent) which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2019 (28.7 per cent).

It noted that of all confirmed cases Edo and Ondo had 38 per cent apiece while Ebonyi had 11 per cent, and the predominant age group affected was 11 to 40 years. The male to female ratio was 1:1...

At least three persons died of a suspected deadly lassa fever at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano.

The three victims including two medical doctors died few hours after operating a pregnant patient, suspected to be a primary carrier at the teaching hospital.

A senior medical doctor in AKTH who wanted his name not mentioned told The Guardian Nigeria that the case is under investigation to establish the fact.

He said the hospital has already collected samples of the primary source for investigation at the the National Infectious disease...

Kano state Government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state which has so far claimed the lives of three (3) persons comprising of two doctors and the patient believed to be the first victim.

This was made known by the Honorable Commissioner, Kano State Ministry of Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim tsanyawa during a press conference on Wednesday.

According to him, the ministry currently has a total of 292 persons who had contact with the said victims on its watch list which would help to quickly quarantine anyone who shows any symptoms of the disease to avoid further spread.

He said the first case was a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Gwale LGA who fell sick two weeks after the death of her mother and was referred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital from a private hospital but also passed away on the 1st of January, 2020...

The Ebonyi state Ministry of Health has confirmed the death of a 75-year-old woman from Lassa fever infection.

According to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, the victim was brought to the state university teaching hospital 10 days ago with symptoms similar to malaria.

It added that she started vomiting blood which raised concerns of the likelihood that she had been infected of the hemorrhagic viral disease.

Nimkong Ndam, Plateau Commissioner of Health, on Friday confirmed five cases of Lassa fever in the state.

Ndam told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the patients of the ailment had been admitted in two hospitals in the state, adding that three of them were undergoing treatment; one had completed treatment, while the fifth one had been discharged.

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja in Kogi State has confirmed three cases of Lassa fever and one death in the last one week in the hospital.

The Head of Clinical Services (HCSs), FMC Lokoja, Dr Bernard Ododo disclosed this on Sunday in Lokoja.

He said that five suspected cases of Lassa fever were reported at the hospital during the last week, out of which three were positive, with one person confirmed died.

According to him: ”Five suspected cases were reported at the hospital in the last one week; three already tested positive, of which one died.

”Two cases have already been transferred to Lassa Fever Management Center at Irua Specialist Hospital in Edo State.

”Two others (of which one has died) has their results being awaited from NCDC Laboratory in Abuja.”

He therefore advised residents to adopt all the necessary precautions to prevent the outbreak of epidemic prone diseases in the state.

The Jigawa state government has confirmed a case of Lassa fever involving a medical doctor at Jahun local government area of the state.

Salisu Mu’azu, acting permanent secretary, Jigawa state ministry of health, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday.

He said Anthony Etim, the victim, is a staff member of Medicins Sans Frontieres also known as Doctors without Borders.

Mu’azu said Etim developed symptoms of the virus after an official engagement at an internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in Borno state.

The acting permanent secretary said Etim is undergoing treatment at the isolated infectious disease control unit in Jahun hospital.

In Ogun, Tomi coker, the state commissioner of health, confirmed a single case of the disease.

She said the case was confirmed by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Virology Laboratory on January 24.

She said the patient is a pregnant 29-year-old who took ill and was referred to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Abeokuta.
