Government, WHO declare ends of cholera outbreak in Yobe, Borno

Yobe and Borno state governments in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partners have officially declared an end of cholera outbreak in the two states.

The declaration was made public in separate press conferences held by the state commissioners of Health, Dr. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa and Dr. Kwaya Bura, on Tuesday in Yobe and Borno.

The commissioners said that both states were declared cholera-free when suspected cases in the epidemic areas significantly declines and all samples from suspected cholera cases were tested negative by the Rapid Diagnostic Test or culture for a minimum period of two weeks.

In Yobe, the health commissioner, who was represented by Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Lawan Gana said, the first cases of cholera were reported in July, 2018 from communities along Borno and Yobe borders.

?The situation is more critical in Gujba, Damaturu and Gulani LGAs where insecurity, massive flood following heavy rainfall, and difficult geographical terrain aided transmission of infections especially during rainy season,? he said.

He said as it stands today, a total of 1,813 cases have been recorded in Yobe state with 61 associated deaths, while giving a case fatality rate of 3.36 percent.

?591 of these cases were reported in Gulani, 458 cases in Gujba, 489 cases in Damaturu, 181 cases in Fune and 67 cases in Potiskum local government areas of Yobe states?, he said...

Cholera: Nigeria identifies 83 local government areas as ?hotspots?

As the rainy season begins, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has identified 83 local government areas as ?hotspots? for cholera in the country.

The agency says three states, Bauchi, Kano and Zamfara, carry over 70 per cent of the burden of the disease in the country.

Cholera ?hotspots? are places where the disease outbreak occurs on a regular basis...

WHO supports Adamawa following declaration of a new outbreak of cholera in three Local Government Areas

Yola, 19 June 2019 - With the notification of newly confirmed cases from Yola North, Yola South and Girei local government areas (LGAs), the Adamawa State Ministry of Health has declared on 18 June 2019 an outbreak of cholera. As of 17 June 2019, a total of 76 cases have been reported, including one death from three LGAs Yola North (44 cases including 1 death), Yola South (1 case) and Girei (31 cases).

In a statement on the current situation, the State Ministry of Health indicated that following the first notifications of suspected acute watery diarrhea, authorities collected samples, which tested positive for cholera.

In response to the outbreak and with the technical support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, the State Ministry of Health activated the Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate the response and deployed Rapid Response Teams to the most affected communities to facilitate outbreak investigation, case identification, community sensitization and prompt referral to the designated cholera treatment centre at the Yola Specialist Hospital...

NCDC records 64 suspected cases of cholera in Adamawa, Katsina states

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says it has recorded 64 suspected cases of cholera reported from seven local government areas in two states of the country.

Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General, NCDC, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He stated that 40 cases were recorded in Adamawa and 24 in Katsina.

He added that eight cases were confirmed in the laboratory with one death recorded.

Ihekweazu said that the Cholera Technical Working Group (TWG) had continued to coordinate cholera activities in states in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR) and support from partners...

4 confirmed killed in latest cholera outbreak in NE Nigeria

ABUJA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four people have been confirmed killed in the latest cholera outbreak in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa, said an international humanitarian agency on Friday.

A total number of 633 cases have been reported in three local government areas affected by the outbreak as of August 16, the Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC), a humanitarian agency providing aids to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the northeast region of Nigeria, said in a statement.

Those affected by the outbreak are mostly IDPs. Due to recent heavy rains and flooding, more cases could be confirmed over the coming weeks, said the humanitarian agency...

Cholera: NCDC records 72 suspected cases in 3 Adamawa LGAs

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 72 suspected cases of cholera reported from three local government areas in Adamawa.

The Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Ihekweazu said the 24 cases were confirmed in the laboratory and no death was recorded.

33 Die From Cholera Outbreak In Rivers

No fewer than 33 people have died following the outbreak of cholera in various communities in Andoni local government area of Rivers State.

Also, no fewer than 100 persons have been hospitalised as a result of the outbreak in Unyeada, Ngo, Afaradigi, Samanga and Oyorokoto communities in the local government area.

Chairman of the Ngo Town Community Development Committee, Clement Sunday, who disclosed this to newsmen in Port Harcourt, said his community alone has lost over 10 persons.

Sunday said the number of death was increasing by the day as one person dies every six to 12 hours due to alleged inadequate health officials to manage the over 100 persons already diagnosed with the bacteria disease in the local government for the past one week.

He said he was keeping tabs and monitoring the situation, and called for urgent deployment of more health officials to help handle the situation...

An outbreak of cholera has claimed four lives and is causing a major health crisis in Unyeada Community, Andoni Council Area of Rivers State.

No fewer than 20 cases of cholera, an acute diarrheal disease that could kill within hours if left untreated, have so far been reported in Unyeada Community.
