The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) yesterday released data showing that cholera cases were still being reported from eight states of the federation, saying 16,008 suspected cases including 186 deaths had been reported from 16 states since the beginning of the year.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the eight states where cholera was still being reported include Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kogi, Plateau and Kaduna...

Eleven persons have died, while over forty seven have been hospitalized in Bebeji local government area of Kano state, following a suspected outbreak of Cholera.

Three villages which were reportedly affected include; Hayin Madaci, Kuki and Falli Sarki.

A Youth Leader in the area, Ubale Dawud Abubakar said the villages have being battling the suspected cholera outbreak for over a week now.

He said they have reported case to the authorities, but awaiting response.

Musa Abdullahi who is a father of six children, said the eleventh person that died as a result of the disease was buried on Sunday evening ,

He said about 47 persons are being treated at homes and some patent medicine stores around as the villages lack clinic or hospital.

The outbreak has now been brought under control and residents of the community have been advised to constantly keep their environment clean.

The district head of Ushafa, Alhaji Muhammad Baba, who confirmed to TVC News that not less than 5 people lost their lives in the wake of the outbreak, said the disease swept through the community with a population of about 10,000 people forcing a sanitation exercise to become necessary due to the number of cases recorded...

8 killed, 20 hospitalised in suspected cholera outbreak in Kano

Barely one week after about eleven persons died of a suspected cholera outbreak in Bebeji Local government area of Kano State, another similar outbreak has been recorded in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the State, claiming about eight lives with 20 others hospitalised.

An eyewitness, Ibrahim Sale, said on Saturday that apart from six deaths recorded in about four villages, his neighbour?s daughter, Khadija aged 5, died on Thursday afternoon after receiving over ten drips following persistent stooling and vomiting.

In separate interviews, Gwarzo Local Government Council Chairman, Bashir Kutama, and District Head of Gwarzo, Alhaji Shehu Kabiru Bayero, confirmed the suspected cholera outbreak.

The duo said that eight persons had died of the disease and the council had procured medicine to treat the patients.

When newsmen visited the General Hospital Gwarzo, it was discovered that most of the patients exhibited symptoms peculiar to cholera...

Cholera: Abuja records seven deaths in four communities ? Official

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said that seven deaths have been recorded from the outbreak of cholera in four communities in the territory.

Humphrey Okoroukwu, the Director of Public Health in the Health and Human Services Secretariat, FCTA, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Mr Okoroukwu said two deaths were recorded at Kubwa village, one at Sauka, another two deaths at Mpape and two at Ushafa.

However, he said that the outbreak in Kwali and Kuje Local Area Councils did not claim any life, while the situation in the two area councils and those at Sauka, Mpape and Kubwa villages had been curtailed...

Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso on Tuesday, confirmed that the state has recorded 28 deaths in the state between the month of January and July this year as a result of 400 cases of acute watery diarrhea recorded in the state with 50 confirmed cases of cholera across 33 Local Government Areas of the State.

According to him, the state Government through his ministry has instituted several control measures to combat the outbreak which is currently experienced in 17 states of the federation, Kano inclusive...

About 18 people are feared dead in Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State, while 24 others are currently hospitalised following the outbreak of cholera in the council. The current casualty brings the figure of the dead to 47.

The outbreak, which had recently claimed 29 lives and about 181 cases, were recorded in Funtua, Kusada, Kaita, Ingawa, Katsina and Kankia Local Government Areas of the state.

Cholera outbreak kills 14 in Borno

Borno State Government on Wednesday confirmed fourteen persons dead following an outbreak of cholera.

The state commissioner for health Haruna Mshelia made the disclosure during a press conference in Maiduguri.

Mshelia said the death of the persons is suspected to be from Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) in the state.

He said a total of 250 acute watery diarrhoea cases had been treated so far...

The country may be battling the largest outbreak of cholera barely a month after the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, said it had contained the outbreak.

Fear is growing as many Nigerians pay with their lives. Almost on daily basis, in the last one week, the media has reported the death of one or more Nigerian due to cholera.

Many states are affected. The fear that the situation may get worse may not be unconnected with the fact that the rains, a factor in the spread, are still much around and every part of Nigeria is a potentially fertile ground for cholera outbreak.

There have been conflicting figures of cholera cases but the latest Epidemiology Summary Sunday Vanguard obtained from the NCDC shows that no fewer than 434 Nigerians have lost their lives to the outbreak and 23,893 suspected cases recorded between January and August 2018.

The reported cases were from 168 local governments in 17 states of Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Borno, Ebonyi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Yobe, Sokoto and Zamfara as well as the FCT since the beginning of the year.

According to the Epidemiology Summary, in the week of 34 (21- 26 August,) about 228 new suspected cases were reported in Zamfara (105), Kano (96) and Katsina (27), with 9 deaths (5 in Zamfara and 4 in Kano).

Also, update from the World Health Organisation, WHO, and other partners on Echo Daily reveals that, with such suspected cases, including deaths, the figure has exceeded the combined number of cases recorded from 2015 to 2017.

The WHO report traces the huge number of cases to factors including limited access to water and sanitation infrastructure, poor hygiene practices and harsh weather conditions...

Fresh cases of cholera have left 61 people dead and 50 still on admission in hospitals across Yobe State.

Confirming the figures on Friday in a statement, the state government also noted that there were 906 fresh cases.

According to NAN, Dr Muhammad Kawuwa, Commissioner for Health, said the cases of Acute Water Diarrhoea (AWD) reported in parts of the state were later confirmed to be cholera after laboratory tests.

He said: ?Some of the AWD cases were caused by Vibrio bacterae, the bacteria that cause cholera. Over 795 patients were successfully treated and discharged, 50 are still on admission in various health facilities across the state.

?Unfortunately, we lost 61 patients mainly due to delays in timely reporting to the healthcare facilities for life saving treatment.?

He also stated that 906 cases were recorded in six local government areas: Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu, Fune, Potiskum and Nangere in two months...

Local authorities on Sunday confirmed that 36 people were killed by the water-borne disease in Borno, local daily The Guardian reported on Monday, citing data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

Fresh cholera outbreak kills five in Gombe

Gombe State Government on Thursday said a fresh outbreak of cholera had killed five people, while 16 others were hospitalised at the Primary Health Centre, Kembu in Balanga Local Government Area of the state.

The state Acting Epidemiologist, Dr Nuhu Bile, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe.

Bile said that the cholera outbreak occurred in October.

He said that the State Rapid Response team alongside World Health Organisation had visited the scene immediately it received news of the incident...

ABUJA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a cholera outbreak hitting at least three out of six of Nigeria northeastern states has risen to 175 as of early November, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), an international humanitarian group on Monday.

Late September, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and local officials in Nigeria confirmed only 97 killed by the water-borne disease.

Following its recent findings, the NRC, while confirming the latest death toll in the northern city of Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, said 10,000 people were affected by the outbreak in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe -- all in the northeast region...

Nigeria cholera deaths spike more than tenfold over 2017

Nov. 14 (UPI) -- There have been 1,110 documented cholera deaths in 2018, more than 13 times higher than cholera deaths in the same time period in 2017, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control said Wednesday.

The NCDC's weekly epidemiological report said there were 48,686 suspected cholera cases, 829 laboratory confirmed and 1,110 deaths across 29 states in the first 43 weeks of the year. During the same time period in 2017, there were 3,642 suspected cases and 84 deaths across 19 states.

In the 43rd week of 2018, there were 454 suspected cases, two lab confirmed and 30 deaths...

Cholera outbreak kills 17 in Anambra

No fewer than 17 persons have reportedly lost their lives in some Anambra State communities due to a disease outbreak suspected to be cholera.

The affected areas were in the Anambra West Local Government Area of the state. It was learnt that the affected communities included Igbedor, Nzam, Umuenwenum Anam and Ode.
