It is a worry state of mind for the residents of Katsina State as they groan under intense heat as daily temperature currently averages as high as 39 degree Celsius, while the state government warns of an outbreak of Cerebrum Spinal Meningitis in the state.

Although the number of casualties of the disease was unavailable as of press time, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Kabir Mustapha, on Friday, confirmed the outbreak of CSM in the state.

Sixteen people have lost their lives to cerebrospinal meningitis in Magama local government area of Niger state, state officials confirmed yesterday.

The breakdown of mortalities shows that nine female and seven male died in the latest outbreak of the disease in Madakayi and Aungwan Tunga villages of the local government.

The commissioner of health Dr. Mustapha Jibril at a press briefing on the development yesterday said the victims were between the age of one and 20.

He said the high casualty was as a result of the people's reluctant to seek medical attention immediately the they develop the symptoms, while blaming the anomaly on witchcraft.

The commissioner disclosed that 31 cases of meningitis was reported across four local government areas of the state on March 6, including Magama. The other affected local government areas were Kontagora, Rijau and Agwara...

Health Commissioner confirms meningitis spread in Zamfara

The Zamfara Government has confirmed the spread of meningitis to all the 14 local government areas of the state.

Alhaji Suleiman Gummi, the state Commissioner for Health told newsmen on Tuesday in Gusau, that the disease first emerged in Birnin-Magaji local government area 10 days ago.

A reliable government source confirmed this to Channels Television on Sunday.

The deaths were said to have occurred in seven local governments of Kebbe, Bodinga, Rabah, Wamakko, Gada, Dange/Shuni and Tureta.

The state government however said that so far, it has deployed about 15 medical teams, comprising of over 150 medical personnel to the 23 local governments of the state to prevent further spread.

Meningitis: Death toll hits 269; 1,828 suspected cases

An outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria has killed 269 people in recent weeks, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said, as Africa?s most populous country and aid organisations attempt to tackle the surge in infections.

As of Monday, 1,828 suspected cases of meningitis were reported with 269 deaths in 15 of the country?s 36 states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Twitter late on Tuesday.

The centre said on its website that 33 people died of meningitis in 2016.

Death toll from Nigeria?s meningitis outbreak has hit 328, the nation's health minister said Saturday.

Prof. Isaac Odewole said the country was battling an entirely new strain of the bacteria called meningitis stereotype C and vaccines were not readily available for commercial sale.

Previous outbreak had been the stereotype A, which killed at least 33 people in 2016, the minister said in a statement.

The current meningitis outbreak in Nigeria has so far killed at least 489 people, the health minister, Isaac Adewole, said Tuesday.

Mr. Adewole said 4,637 cases of cerebrospinal meningitis were recorded across the country by Monday.

The ministry had announced 428 deaths recorded on Friday.

The minister gave the latest figure during an emergency meeting of northern state governors and traditional rulers on Tuesday in Kaduna...

Highlights
 An outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), which started in December 2016, is ongoing in Nigeria.
 As at April 13, 2017, a total of 5,695 suspected cases have been reported; 221 (4%) are laboratory confirmed;
611 deaths (10.9%) have been recorded.
 The outbreak currently affects 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across six states? Zamfara, Sokoto,
Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Yobe. Note that the affected LGAs in Yobe State have reported NmA. No NmC (as
seen in the other states above) has been reported in Yobe.
 The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to provide onsite

Highlights
 The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to coordinate a national emergency response to the ongoing cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) outbreak, which started in December 2016.
As at April 17, 2017, 8,057 suspected cases have been reported; 230 (3%) are laboratory confirmed. A total of 745 deaths (9.2%) have been recorded.
 During the last four weeks, a total of 38 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across six states? Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Yobe?reached alert/epidemic threshold status. LGAs reaching the alert threshold trigger intensified epidemic preparedness; a full outbreak response is activated in LGAs reaching the epidemic threshold.
 Although suspected case numbers have increased in Yobe State, no Neisseria meningitis C cases (observed in other states) has been reported in the state.
 NCDC Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed to affected states continue to provide on-site technical assistance.
 Mass vaccination campaigns are planned in Sokoto during April 24 ? 28, 2017. National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) is coordinating the vaccination activities with NCDC and other partners.
 Distribution of medicines and laboratory commodities to affected states is ongoing.
 NCDC continues to analyse the outbreak situation and provide preparedness and response guidance to states and other jurisdictions.

LAGOS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The number of new cases of suspected Cerebro Spinal Meningitis is declining in most affected Nigerian states, an official with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said Thursday.

Plans have already started to prevent future outbreaks and ensure better preparedness as more vaccines arrive, Lawal Bakare, spokesperson for NCDC said in a statement reaching Xinhua in Lagos.

Bakare said reactive vaccination campaigns led by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency were successfully conducted first in Zamfara and subsequently in Sokoto State.

He added both state governments have fully engaged in conducting the campaigns in order to ensure that the vaccines get to the people who are most at risk.

"As at the May 9, 2017, 13,420 suspected cases of meningitis have been reported from 23 states with 1,069 deaths, giving a case fatality ratio of eight percent," he added...
