In Nigeria, the first wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case of 2014 has been reported, from Kano state. It is the first WPV1 case in the country since December. Since September 2013, seven WPV1 cases have been reported, five from Kano. Together with Borno (the location of the last previous case from December), Kano state holds the key to a polio-free Nigeria. See ?Nigeria? section below for more.

Nigeria Sees Third Polio Case in a Year

A new case of poliomyelitis has been confirmed in Nigeria, says the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

The case, found in Gujba council area in Yobe state, is the third case in more than a year so far in the country.

Confirmation analysis shows it is wildpoliovirus 3--the least virulent type of polio...

Nigeria: Kano Records Two Fresh Cases of Polio

Kano - The Kano State Government recorded two fresh cases of wild polio virus type 1 in the first quarter of 2014 in two local government areas of the state.

The affected councils are Tarauni and Gaya local government areas.

Nigeria: Polio Virus Discovered in Kano

The Kano State Government has again discovered new polio virus in Sumaila Local Government Area of the state.

The new case has put the number of Wide Polio Virus (WPB) discovered this year in the state at three as the state government had in its first quarter review announced the discovery of two cases of polio disease in Gaya and Tarauni Local Government Areas.

Disturbed by the development, the state government tagged some of the troubled local government areas including Sumaila, Tarauni, Gaya, Minjubri, Tudunwada, Faggae, Bichi and Rogo among others, as high risk areas that needed special attention...

Nigeria: Kaduna Plans Response As Polio Re-Emerges

Kaduna ? The report of an environmental sampling conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with federal and state governments has shown that the polio virus has been discovered in sewage along the Kamacha Bridge in Zaria, the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Primary Health Care Agency, Dr. Sufiyan M. Babale, disclosed yesterday.

Babale told Daily Trust that the environ-mental sampling which was conducted in April this year gave an indication that some people may be with the virus, though he said carrying the virus may not necessarily mean paralysis...

The federal government has stated that its determination and efforts to stamp out the wild polio virus by the end of 2014 , is yielding fruits, saying that the country has only recorded five cases of the virus within the past one year.

Speaking yesterday at the 10th meeting of the Presidential Taskforce on Polio Eradication, the executive director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency(NPHCDA), Dr Ado Mohammed, said, ?We are making progress. So far, we have only recorded five cases in Nigeria. One in Yobe and four in Kano and if you compare it with other countries, Nigeria has made most progress than any other country in the world and you heard what Bill Gates said in one of his interactions somewhere, that he?s proud of Nigeria?s programme and that the progress that has been made in the programme by Nigeria, if its sustained, by next year, we?re going to exit the polio endemic country.?

Secondly, he added that the spread of the virus itself has reduced to only five local government areas out of the 774 local government areas ...

Nigeria is still one of the three countries with the wild polio virus with states like Kano and Yobe having cases despite claims by the Federal Government to have made successes as regards taming the virus.

The Supervising Minister of State for Health, Khaliru Alhassan, on Thursday said the Federal Government had contained the spread of the virus except in Kano and Yobe.

Mr. Alhassan made this known when he gave update on the success being recorded by government towards total eradication of polio in the country.

He said the virus is now confined to only five local government areas compared to the more generalised situation in the past...

Nigeria's Polio cases drops from 50 to 6 in 1 year

It's always been an issue of great concern that a fast developing nation like Nigeria, still recorded cases of Polio, a disease which has supposedly been eradicated in many other countries of the world. At this time, Nigerian can celebrate a victory, as data coming from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative revealed that in the year 2014, the number of Polio cases in Nigeria has dropped from 50 cases recorded at this time last year, to a commendable low of just 6 cases this year.

This landmark development has been applauded by public and private leaders the world over, including the Microsoft founder - Bill Gates.

Credit for this milestone must be given to the Nigerian Government and its Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication (PTFoPE)), as well as various interventions from the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, the Dangote Foundation, as well as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation...
