No fewer than 11 persons were killed by cholera outbreak in Jigawa, the state commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Tafida, has said.

This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Mati Ali, the Public Relations Officer in the state Ministry of Health on Thursday in Dutse.

The statement said that a total of 153 cholera cases were reported in the state from Jan, 1 to date.

It added that only four people died at the hospital while the remaining seven died at home.

The statement said that the cholera cases were reported in Taura, Birnin Kudu, Garki, Ringim, Babura and Gwaram local government areas of the state...

Benue State government on Tuesday said six people in the state have died from cholera and 193 other diagnosed with the disease.

The Permanent Secretary, Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr Jonathan Kwaghtsule, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

"We have so far recorded 6 deaths from the outbreak, while 36 patients are currently on admission in seven hospitals in Makurdi.

DAKAR (Thomson Reuters Foundation) ? A cholera outbreak across Nigeria has killed 24 people and infected 952 in the first four weeks of 2014, following a surge in cases last year, according to the Ministry of Health.

The number of cholera cases went up more than tenfold in the West African country in 2013. There were 597 cases and 18 deaths in 2012 compared to 6,600 cases and 229 deaths last year, according to the latest government epidemiological report.

Kano State was the worst affected at the beginning of 2014 with 234 cases and 12 deaths. Neighbouring Bauchi state, which had reported five cases in early January, reported an additional 237 cases in the last week of the month as the disease spread...

Cholera outbreak claims 54 lives in Bauchi- NAN

A new wave of cholera epidemic blowing across the country may have claimed hundreds of lives since January and does not seem to be abating anytime soon with the onset of the rainy season, Weekly Trust findings reveal.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed an outbreak of the infectious disease in 14 states, where it said 9,006 cases were reported, with 106 deaths in the first quarter of 2014, adding that the situation was not this critical last year.

But state health officials say the casualty figures for the last three months could be much higher as some deaths that happened outside health facilities, which are many, are not officially reported, while many others do not even know the cause of death...
