EXCESSIVE heat being experienced in Niger State by residents has led to an outbreak of measles epidemic in no fewer than six communities in Chachanga Local Government Area of the state, with about 10 children have been hospitalised so far.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the outbreak of the disease was spreading fast across other communities, which included Nassarawa C, Ungwan Daji, Tayi, Albishir, Dutse Kura Gwari and Kutirku in Chanchanga Local Government Area, but there had been no death recorded so far...

Measles, meningitis claim four lives in Jigawa

THE Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tafida Abubakar has disclosed that, at least, four deaths have been recorded in the state from measles and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in the last seven months.

The commissioner, who made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in his office Wednesday, said from June 2012 to February 2013, the ministry has recorded 256 cases of measles in 19 local councils with three deaths, 24 confirmed measles cases and additional 38 confirmed positive.

Abubakar explained further that for CSM, 16 cases were recorded within the same period with one death of a three-year-old...

Minna - Niger Commissioner for Health, Dr Ibrahim Sule, says no fewer than six persons are confirmed dead following the outbreak of measles in some parts of the state.

Sule made this known on Thursday in Minna, saying that the outbreak was reported within the last two weeks in four local government areas.

?I can confirm that six deaths were recorded due to the outbreak of the disease in the state so far, but the situation is under control at the moment,? he said.

The commissioner listed the affected council areas as Mokwa, Edati, Bosso and Chanchaga, saying that Chanchaga was worst hit...

Nigeria: Measles Hits North - 34 Kids Dead, Thousands Infected

Thirty four children have so far died in the current outbreak of measles that has been ravaging the northern states in the past two months.

State health officials who confirmed the deaths to our correspondents also said over 2,708 children aged between nine months and three years are on admission in hospitals.

Zamfara State recorded the highest number of casualties with 14 deaths. Nine died in Katsina, six in Niger, four in Yobe while a young child died in Kano few hours after he was brought to the hospital...

DEPUTY Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Abubakar D. Aliyu, has explained that only eight children died of measles and whooping cough and not 87, while the 498 cases recorded in 14 council areas of the state are being treated at the various health centres and clinics.

Speaking on the outbreak of measles and whooping cough Thursday in Damaturu, he said: ?I want to clarify the figures on the outbreak of the six child-killer diseases in Yobe State that eight children died of measles and whooping cough; and not 87 children as erroneously carried by a media organisation (not The Guardian).?

Aliyu, who oversees the Ministry of Health as its commissioner, said that the eight children, who died of measles, represented the total number of cases treated at the Potiskum General Hospital...

Gombe State Govt. Records 173 Cases Of Measles In 3 Months

Gombe State Ministry of Health said on Tuesday it had recorded 173 suspected cases of measles in four local government areas in the last three months. The areas are Gombe, Balanga, Dukku and Nafada.

The State Epidemiologist, Dr Joshua Abubakar, told the the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe that out of the cases, 10 were confirmed and currently undergoing treatment.

Abubakar said the figure represented cases reported from January to date...

ANOTHER unfortunate scenario that would certainly worsen the plight of persons recently displaced from their villages and homes by the recent religious crisis in Taraba State is unfolding with the outbreak of diseases, including measles, which now ravage their different refugee camps in Wukari Local Council of the state.

Mainly affected by the outbreak, which The Guardian learnt was caused by poor sanitary condition of the camps scattered all over the area, according to a Red Cross source, were children. And ?if urgent steps are not taken by the authority, many families will lose their children because the situation is fast getting out of hand,? the anonymous source said.

Confirming the report, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Wukari branch, Jerry Agabison, said, ?the situations in the camps are nothing to write home about because we are already experiencing an outbreak of measles. Many children have been affected...?
