Nigeria: Meningitis Kills Three in Taraba

Fresh outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis and measles has killed three people and left nine hospitalised in Taraba, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency said yesterday.

The agency also confirmed 14 cases of polio this year, affecting seven states. The cases increased from four initially recorded for the year.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency said Thursday it was "aware of a few outbreaks of cerebrospinal meningitis and measles, especially in the north east..."

The most recent national update March 30th set the total number of fatalities at 28.

However, outbreaks in Taraba (post above) and Adamawa (below) are ongoing.

Meningitis kills two in Yola

Two people have died of meningitis in Yola, Adamawa State, a director in the city primary healthcare department has said.
Malam Muhammad Iya-Hammawa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Friday that no fewer than 10 cases of meningitis were reported at the centre in the last two weeks.
He, however, assured the public that adequate measures had been taken to check the disease.
The director said, ``So far the Local Government Healthcare Department has reports of 10 cases of meningitis from the Federal Medical Centre Jos, out of which two deaths were recorded.

Nigeria: Adamawa Vaccinates 1,000 Inmates Against Meningitis

Yola ? About 1,000 inmates, including those awaiting trial at the Yola and Jimeta prisons in Adamawa State have been vaccinated against cerebro-spinal meningitis.

Last week, there were reports that many inmates at the Yola prison were suffering from meningitis, but the Comptroller of Prisons in the state, Mr Andrew Barka denied the report.
