Nigeria: FCTA Records Three Suspected Lassa Fever Cases
BY CATHERINE AGBO, 1 MARCH 2012
Comment
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it has recorded three suspected Lassa Fever cases since the recent outbreak of the diusease.

Secretary, FCT Health and Human Services, Dr. Demola Onakomaiya, who disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing said the three suspected cases were reported from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) and National Hospital.

He, however, said the cases had not been confirmed, just as no deaths had been recorded.

Onakomaiya said that that as part of efforts to prevent, control and ensure effective case management, the secretariat had embarked on community sensitisation and mobilisation through health education in markets, motor parks, mosques, churches and other public places as well as prepositioning of personal protective equipment and medical supplies in FCTA health facilities across the territory.

Nigeria: Tackling the Lassa Fever Epidemic
8 MARCH 2012
Comment
43 years after the first case of Lassa fever was recorded, the country is still grappling with the virus that is transmitted by hairless tailed bush rats that abound in the country. With more than 40 lives already lost and over 400 others infected this year alone, Olaolu Olusina examines the inadequate surveillance system and lacklustre response to the killer virus which is responsible for some 5,000 deaths every year

Nigerians were indeed jolted when the news of a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever was broken by the Federal Ministry of Health about seven weeks ago. Many were further worried at the revelation that the disease, which had spread into 12 states including Edo, Taraba, Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Plateau, Nassarawa, Ebonyi, Ondo, Rivers, Anambra and Lagos States, was being transmitted through a species of bush rats.

At the last count, the government disclosed that hospital records showed that over 40 lives had been lost to the disease which had assumed epidemic proportions with over 400 persons already infected. Edo and Taraba topped the list of states with the highest casualty figures while about 50 million Nigerians are believed to be at risk from the disease which is even killing doctors and nurses.

Re: Nigeria: Lassa Fever cases; 92 fatalities

As can be seen from the post directly above, the figures reported in the post below are out of date and incorrect. The Nigerian Ministry of Health had produced consistent weekly epidemiological reports until February 2012 at which time reporting became erratic. The MOH website http://www.fmh.gov.ng/ has been gutted, is rarely available and has deleted all archival material. - Ro

87 Die Of Lassa Fever
By julius osahon

BENIN CITY - Eighty seven persons have so far lost their lives out of 855 cases of reported lassa fever cases in the country, just as medical practitioners warned that the deadly disease which is on rampage in Africa is worst than the dreaded Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Making this disclosure in Benin City, the former Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University and Medical Laboratory Scientist, Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor, urged both federal and state government to take the issue of lassa fever more seriously, even than HIV and AIDS.

This is the first official report I've seen from Nigeria since May. It is not posted on the MOH website. I would appreciate it if anyone comes across a link to the full report to post it here. In addition, using the last available official numbers from May 4th (post #36 above), these new figures represent an increase of 67 suspected cases, 4 lab confirmed and 1 fatality in the past two months. ProMED-mail

<promed@promedmail.org>

[Since the previous ProMED-mail from Nigeria, dated 9 Jul 2012, this the number of cases has risen by 78 and the number of fatalities by 6 (see: Lassa fever - Nigeria (07): neglected disease 20120709.1195196).

This statement has a less alarmist tone than than the previous report from Nigeria and indicates that no new cases are being detected as a consequence of enhanced surveillance. Furthermore it states that supplies of ribavirin, the only drug known to be effective in treatment of Lassa fever virus infection, are adequate and generally available.

Ribavirin (brand names: Copegus, Rebetol, Ribasphere, Vilona and Virazole) is an anti-viral drug indicated for severe respiratory syncytial virus infection (individually), hepatitis C infection (used in conjunction with peginterferon alfa-2b or peginterferon alfa-2a) and other viral infections. Ribavirin is a prodrug, which when metabolised resembles purine RNA nucleotides. In this form it interferes with RNA metabolism required for viral replication. How it exactly affects viral replication is unknown; many mechanisms have been proposed for this but none of these has been proven to date. Multiple mechanisms may be responsible for its actions. The primary observed serious adverse side-effect of ribavirin is hemolytic anemia, which may worsen preexisting cardiac disease. The mechanism for this effect is unknown. It is dose-dependent and may sometimes be compensated by decreasing dose.

Ribavirin is active against a number of DNA and RNA viruses. It is a member of the nucleoside antimetabolite drugs that interfere with duplication of viral genetic material. Though not effective against all viruses, ribavirin is remarkable as a small molecule for its wide range of activity, including important activities against influenzas, flaviviruses and agents of many viral hemorrhagic fevers including Lassa fever. (See: http://www.news-medical.net/health/Ribavirin-What-is-Ribavirin.aspx.)

Nigeria: The Onslaught of Lassa Fever
BY JUDD-LEONARD OKAFOR, 22 JANUARY 2013

Lassa fever has threatened Nigeria for 44 straight years--and killed hundreds of people. Yet it continues to march on.

This year, at least three deaths--among them a healthworker--have been reported in Benue, prompting despatch of monitoring teams. Ondo will also be covered by teams investigating reported outbreaks.

The same outbreak was reported at the start of 2012, and it spread fast: in three months, the fever spread to 19 states. At least 623 cases were reported and 70 people died--including three doctors and four nurses, according to epidemiological reports by the federal health ministry.

By last year's end, 1656 cases and 112 deaths would be reported in 23 states. The cases are a steady increase from 2011, which saw 1172 cases and 50 deaths.
