To avoid a large-scale spread, the Nigerien authorities plan to "ban the import and export of avian products" from Nigeria, which shares 1,500 kilometers of borders with Niger, she added. The capital Niamey is generally supplied with avian products by the giant Nigerian farms. "We tried to block" these exchanges of avian products with Nigeria "and each time they (the traders) find a passage," regretted Dr. Harouna. "This new crisis that is falling on us is a second case of extremely serious disaster," worries Guy Van Kesteren, director of the AviNiger farm, the largest in Niamey and one of the most severely affected by the disease. In August 2020, some 32,000 laying hens had perished on the same farm due to severe flooding that affected the capital. "If there is no consistent state aid, I think we will have to drastically reduce staff or stop activities," warns Guy Van Kesteren. In 2006, Niger was the second West African country, after Nigeria, where the H5N1 virus was discovered, in Zinder and Maradi (two border regions of Nigeria), causing the death of millions of poultry. Niamey then banned the importation of avian products from Nigeria for two years. But the government had granted compensation to poultry farmers in the affected areas thanks to an "emergency plan" of 13 billion FCFA (nearly 20 million euros).
