Nigeria: Cholera Claims Eight in Niger

No fewer than eight persons have been killed following a fresh outbreak of Cholera in Edati and Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State.

THISDAY gathered that the epidemic was first noticed in Tama-Nku village in Edati Local Government area which led to the death of 7 persons from the village while another one died in the neighbouring village.

Yusuf also said about 27 parents were under treatment at the Danchitagi rural Health Centre, nothing that 22 have recovered from the case and were discharged, while 5 were still hospitalised.

Cholera kills 6 in Niger

Niamey- Cholera has killed at least six of the 347 known cases in Niger, particularly in Niamey and Tillab?ry, the Nigerien Minister of Health, Soumana Sanda, has said.

He however, said that the situation was under control.

Sanda said the development was being monitored by the authorities.

Immediately after the confirmation of the first cases of cholera on May 30, health authorities have taken steps to contain and control the epidemic, according to the minister.

No fewer than 13 persons have been reported dead following the outbreak of cholera in Niger State, Usman Mohammed, the state Director of Primary Health Services, has said. He made this known in an interview with newsmen in Minna on Friday.

He explained that out of the 32 samples of the 457 cases reported to the health ministry, 18 of them were confirmed to have contracted cholera. ``The state had recorded 13 deaths from the confirmed cases of cholera, following the outbreak of the disease from June 1 to date.

``All the cases of cholera recorded in the state are confined to Minna, the state capital, although we have reported cases of diarrhea in Paikoro and Bosso local government areas.? He attributed the outbreak of the disease to the use of contaminated water for domestic purposes by the victims.

?We ask the public to boil their water before drinking.? Mohammed urged the public to always wash their hands after eating or after visiting the toilets or bathroom, to guard against bacterial infection. He said the state government had provided free medication for people suffering from the disease at the Minna General Hospital and other public health institutions. (NAN)
