According to an order from the Governor of Niamey, the city of Niamey has been declared, since January 30, infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) within a radius of 10 kilometers. This decision was taken following the discovery of a new outbreak of this zoonotic disease on a family poultry farm in the Plateau district of the capital. As with the latest cases recorded in recent years, regional authorities have announced measures to stem the expansion of the epidemic.

According to the order of the Governor of the Niamey Region, Brigadier General Assoumane Abdou Harouna, the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, a zoonotic animal disease with Mandatory Notification, affecting several species of farmed birds, birds of ornament and wild birds, with a high mortality rate, was confirmed by the LABOCEL laboratory on January 27, 2024 in a family poultry farm located in the Plateau district in the Communal Niamey 1 district.

Thus, on the proposal of the Regional Director of Livestock, the Governor of the region declared through a decree dated January 30, that the city of Niamey is declared infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), over a radius of 10 kilometers.

Also, announced the regional authorities, all species likely to contract or transmit the targeted disease are placed under health surveillance by the veterinary services which will apply the prophylaxis measures provided for by the regulations.

In recent years, Niger has recorded several quickly contained avian flu epidemics. In February 2022, ten (10) outbreaks of influenza were recorded on farms in Niamey, Tillabéri and Dosso, which affected some 89,998 laying hens, 558 chicks and 298 quails according to the Ministry of Livestock.

After the great pandemic of 2006, Niger also confirmed the occurrence of this disease in March 2021. The health authorities had, in fact, notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) that an outbreak of highly avian influenza A(H5N1) virus pathogen was confirmed on March 16 in a farm of 30,000 poultry with the death of 27,000 in less than three days in commune 4 of Niamey. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular biology techniques (RT-PCR) at the Central Livestock Laboratory (LABOCEL), the national laboratory, but the situation was quickly brought under control.

It should be remembered that the avian flu virus can be transmitted to humans through frequent and intensive contact with respiratory secretions or droppings from infected animals. In humans, avian flu manifests itself by, among other things, fever, cough, muscle pain, eye and respiratory infections. And in addition to the loss of poultry, the disease negatively impacts the economy, household food security and the social climate.
