A Swine Flu alert on the NHS website urges the public to stock up with enough food for two weeks and forge a network of "flu friends" in case they fall ill.
The advice comes as eight cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the UK while on Wednesday night the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the level of the swine flu alert from Phase Four to Phase Five. This is a "strong signal that a pandemic is imminent", according said the WHO.
The NHS alert has outlined a series of key messages including urging people that have flu-like symptoms and have recently returned from Mexico to stay at home and contact their GP. They are warned not to go to their GP surgery, or to a hospital, "as you may spread the disease to others".
It also advises everyone to wash their hands regularly with soap and water and clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs. People are also urged to use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
"Establishing a network of 'flu friends' - friends and relatives - who can help if you fall ill," the NHS advice reads.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health is mailing out a leaflet to all households warning about Swine Flu.
This leaflet includes information about what swine flu is and how it could spread, what the government has done to prepare for a wider outbreak of flu, how people can protect themselves against flu and what to do if they have flu symptoms.
