Salamanders and newts across Europe are being threatened by a skin-eating fungus which has probably arrived on pet amphibians from Asia, according to Zoologists.
This had been discovered in Netherlands in 2013 after all but ten of the fire salamanders of the country had been wiped out. According to the tests, the fungus causes skin disease in a number of related species but not those belonging to Asia.
Findings which have been published in Science suggest that the fungus co-existed with the Asian Salamanders for over 30 million years. The research team from Zoological Society of London and Imperial College teamed up with teams in Belgium and Netherlands for this study...
