Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have shown they care by contributing to World Vision?s efforts to support the victims the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

People from the province have contributed more than $34,215 to relief programs supporting children and families in the earthquake-ravaged Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

Newfoundlanders sponsor 64 children in Haiti through World Vision. Staff in Haiti are working around the clock to ensure the safety of these children.

?It?s wonderful to see that, in spite of the difficult economic times, Newfoundlanders have rallied together to reach out to those who are desperately in need in Haiti,? said World Vision Canada?s Director of Specialized Marketing, Caroline Riseboro. ?The money raised goes a long way to help children and their families find food, shelter, medicine and safety in a time when all of those things have been taken away from them.?

Prime Minister of Haiti thanks province for generosity
The Telegram

Premier Danny Williams said today he received a phone call from the prime minister of Haiti, Jean-Max Bellerive, who expressed a deep appreciation and thanks to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for their generosity in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of Jan. 11.

?I was honoured to accept this phone call of gratitude from Prime Minister Bellerive on behalf of our province,? Williams said. ?Our province?s reputation prevails as we rally together and raise significant funds for the Haiti relief effort and words cannot express how deeply proud I am of the remarkable contributions Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have made to assist the people of Haiti affected by this unimaginable tragedy.

?People have opened their hearts and more importantly their wallets, and Prime Minister Bellerive asked that I pass along to the people of the province his genuine appreciation for this generosity.?

From St. John?s to Port aux Basques, St. Anthony to Nain, and all communities in between, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have stepped up and organized fundraisers, telethons and other events to raise money for Haiti. To date, the people of the province have raised more than $1.8 million for Haiti as that country works to rebuild communities and lives in the aftermath of the earthquake.

This figure includes the donation from the provincial government of $1 million, which was made on behalf of all the people of the province. This provincial government contribution was directed to the regional chapter of the Canadian Red Cross.

N.L. Catholics helping Haiti

Wed Feb 3, 4:08 AM

<!-- phugc -->
ST..JOHNS (CBC) - Catholic churches in Newfoundland and Labrador have collected almost $300,000 to help earthquake-damaged Haiti rebuild.

"It's only going to be a little help because rebuilding is going to be a huge, huge project," said the Archbishop of St. John's Martin Currie, after giving a cheque to the National Council of Development and Peace Tuesday.

"It's going to be a huge undertaking. It's a big undertaking for the international community for the whole world."

Currie said the Canadian government will match the amount, bringing the total to nearly $600,000.

Currie said the money Catholic churches raised in Newfoundland and Labrador will employ Haitians and buy local materials.
