The whales weigh several hundred pounds and gets up to six meters long. Pilot choices are very social and can live in groups of up to 90 individuals.

No one really knows why whales strand, but one reason may be the desire to keep together the flock. Other causes include faulty navigation. But this many whales stranded at the same time is unusual.

Perhaps it's related to changes preceeding today's Christchurch earthquake.

Very low frequency waves have been known to preceed earthquakes and increase in number and volume during the 24-48 hours immediately preceeding a quake.

The Loma Prieta, California quake (in ?? year) had been heavily instrumented for many years and they "caught" the low frequency sounds prior to the major quake.
