Quake rocks New Zealand

Wellington - A magnitude-5.5 earthquake rocked New Zealand's quake-ravaged second largest city Christchurch on Sunday following a series of tremors the previous day.

Seismologists at the state GNS Science said the quake at 20:34 was centred 12km below the surface about 20km east of the city.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

A magnitude-3.5 tremor was recorded in a similar area just before 01:00, which followed a series of six quakes ranging from 3.0 to 4.8 on Saturday.

GNS Science has recorded 2 762 quakes measuring 3 or higher since a magnitude-7.1 shake on September 4 last year, which was the largest to hit a major population area in New Zealand in almost 80 years.

Excerpt:

It was the largest earthquake to strike Canterbury since the 6.3 shake of June 13.

There were no reports of damage from emergency services but phone lines were reported temporarily out in the suburbs of Parklands and Northwood.

The quake was felt widely in Canterbury.

Christchurch resident Annette, who did not want her last name published, said the quake was ?violent?. ?It was a long one, rumble roll. It was just like the old days, the big ones.?

The Prime Minister John Key was one of hundreds rugby supporters who had gathered in the fan zone in Christchurch to watch the All Blacks play Argentina this evening.

The quarterfinal was orginally scheduled to be played at AMI Stadium but was moved after the quake in February.

The crowd at the Christchurch fan zone cheered when the aftershock ended.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister said the latest quake highlighted the on-going challenges people in Christchurch faced.

Christchurch rocking for All Blacks

GEORGINA STYLIANOU AND MICHAEL WRIGHT Last updated 06:16 10/10/2011

Almost as soon as Christchurch settled down to watch the All Blacks last night, aftershock number 7668 rolled through the city ? a rumbling 5.5-pointer felt as far away as Dunedin and Greymouth.

The shock at 8.34pm was the eighth largest since the earthquakes started on September 4 last year and the biggest in magnitude since a 6.3 rumble on June 13.

It was followed by a 3.4-magnitude aftershock at 4.35am this morning.

Last night's quake was a reminder, as if the city needed it, of exactly why Christchurch lost the Rugby World Cup quarterfinal being played between New Zealand and Argentina at Eden Park in Auckland, which the All Blacks won 33-10.

Prime Minister John Key, with thousands of other rugby-watchers at the rugby fanzone in Hagley Park, said it was a "stark reminder" of what Christchurch had experienced.

"I wanted to be here tonight to be part of the crowd because it's a great tragedy that the Rugby World Cup games couldn't be here," Key said.
