Kiwifruit disease Psa V is taking a firmer grip and its spread more aggressive than expected, the industry reported today.

Seeka Kiwifruit Industries said the disease had continued to spread throughout the Te Puke region in the Bay of Plenty, and into new areas.

It had now been found in the Matapihi area, on the outskirts of Tauranga.

N.Z. Kiwifruit Industry Fights to Survive as Virus Multiplies
By Chris Bourke - Oct 5, 2011 6:58 PM ET

New Zealand is failing to slow the spread of a bacterial virus that threatens the survival of its kiwifruit industry and could cost the economy as much as NZ$200 million ($153 million) this year.

About 400 kiwifruit orchards, or 12 percent of New Zealand?s total, are infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv actinidiae as it continues to multiply almost a year after appearing, according to industry body Kiwifruit Vine Health Inc. Export volumes this year may drop 20 percent from last year, Minister of Agriculture David Carter said yesterday in an interview in Wellington...

The kiwifruit industry fears the deadly vine disease Psa-V has spread to Pukekohe with two suspected breakouts.

More tests are under way to confirm the infections, but the discovery is a major blow for the former blue chip $1.5 billion export sector, which has seen gold fruit orcharding in the kiwifruit heartland Bay of Plenty almost wiped out by Psa-V in one year.

Biosecurity agency Kiwifruit Vine Health general manager John Burke said the potential new cases are very disappointing.

"Franklin growers have been vigilant in managing their regional border since the initial outbreak last year. An incursion-tracing report on the two affected orchards is underway. This report may also provide clues as to how long the disease has been present in New Zealand.''

The kiwifruit vine disease Psa-V has now been confirmed in nine Waikato orchards.

Psa-V, a virulent form of the bacterial disease infecting more than 40 per cent of New Zealand kiwifruit orchards, was first found in a Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, orchard late in 2010. It was later detected in Pukekohe late last year.

There are 204 kiwifruit orchards in Waikato.

More than 75 per cent of orchards in Te Puke have succumbed to the disease.

China blamed for Psa-V outbreak

Scientists are on the edge of unravelling the origins of the Psa-V disease devastating the country's kiwifruit vines - and China is the most likely culprit.
A team of Otago University biochemists is confident it will be able to confirm the source of the virulent disease, which was first detected here in November 2010.

The scientists were able to map out the bacterium's entire genetic code using a multi-million dollar advanced genetic sequencer, provided through the government-funded New Zealand Genomics Limited (NZGL).

The results have ruled out one of the main suspects, Italy, which also puts to bed any accusations that New Zealand was the source of historic Italian outbreaks.

Samples of the Chinese Psa strain have also been sequenced, with the results indicating China is the source of both the New Zealand and Italian outbreaks.

The team is currently testing samples from the third main suspect, Chile, with preliminary data showing that it too originated from the Chinese strain.
