Three confirmed measles cases in the Wairarapa
5:21 pm on 9 July 2025

There are three confirmed cases of measles in the Wairarapa region, Health New Zealand says.

It says the three cases are connected and are linked to overseas travel.

Medical Officer of Health in the Greater Wellington region, Dr Annette Nesdale, said all three confirmed cases had recently travelled overseas where they are thought to have caught the virus, but were not infectious on their return flight to New Zealand.

Locations of interest have been released - including a supermarket and a library in the Wairarapa region.

Measles is a highly infectious illness which can affect adults, children and babies.

Health New Zealand (HNZ) said the cases and their close contacts were isolating to prevent further spread.

One of the cases visited two locations in Wairarapa while infectious, on these dates:

Tuesday 1 July: Pak'n Save Masterton, 424 Queen St, Masterton - Between 8.30am to 11am.
Thursday 3 July: Pak'n Save Masterton, 424 Queen St, Masterton - Between 8.30am to 11am.
Thursday 3 July: Carterton Library, 50 Holloway St, Carterton - Between 10am to 12.30pm.

HNZ was urging anyone who have visited these locations on these days and times to monitor themselves for symptoms...

Health New Zealand has confirmed four cases of measles in Northland, including one active case reported on Friday and three historical cases that are no longer infectious.

One of the historical cases had recently travelled to Asia, where measles is circulating, and was considered the likely source of the outbreak.

Four additional individuals linked to the confirmed case are currently being assessed for measles infection. All are in isolation, receiving public health support, and being monitored for symptoms.

Authorities are working swiftly to identify close contacts and ensure those exposed are quarantined to prevent further spread.

A new case of measles has been confirmed in Queenstown.

The case was thought to be linked to recent international travel and had no known connection to cases reported in Northland, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora national clinical director, protection National Public Health Service (NPHS) Dr Susan Jack said.

There are now five known cases of the highly infectious disease in New Zealand, believed to have come from recent, but separate, overseas trips.

The person in Queenstown was isolating and the NPHS Southern was identifying any close contacts and possible exposure locations.

The four cases in Northland were finished with their infectious periods.

However, people in the community were urged to continue monitoring themselves for symptoms...
