The 100-day cough or Whooping Cough is reaching epidemic numbers in Hawke's Bay - with Hastings, Flaxmere and Waipukurau hardest hit.

Already this year 27 cases have been reported, compared to last year when there were 23 cases for the whole year. The Hawke's Bay incidence of 20 cases per 100,000 population is higher than last year when it was 12 and higher than New Zealand's rate of 18.

So far ten cases have been hospitalised.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Lester Calder said the reported cases represented only the tip of the iceberg of disease occurring in the community. Whooping Cough was highly infectious and caused by bacteria which were easily spread through infected people coughing and sneezing...

Cases of whooping cough are on the rise in Nelson and Marlborough and this is only the "tip of the iceberg", say concerned health professionals who are urging people to keep vaccinations up to date.

Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Jill Sherwood said there had been an upsurge of cases since the start of August, with 14 cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, that month and 12 probable cases this month with another six under investigation.

Two cases have required hospitalisation, one in the past week.

Last year, there were five cases in July, six in August, and "normally our September numbers are even lower", she said.

There has been a noticeable increase of whooping cough notifications nationwide in the past four months, with 117 cases in August, compared to 74 the same time last year...

More whooping cough cases on West Coast

The West Coast's whooping cough (pertussis) outbreak continues, despite health authorities offering free booster vaccines to some adults.

Between May 1 and September 30, the Coast had 201 notifications of suspected whooping cough - 26 more suspected cases than the previous week.

To date, 90 have been confirmed.

The outbreak remains centred on Westland, with most cases occurring in children.

Health authorities last week announced free booster vaccines would be available through general practices to health care and early childhood education staff, along with parents of babies under the age of six months...

While the number of new cases of pertussis from Westland district has reduced, the number in the Grey district is starting to climb.

At this stage all the cases in Grey have a link to Westland.

The school holidays are currently on so there is a chance of further spread with travel and sports events. There has also been an increased rate of pertussis in Nelson-Marlborough in recent weeks...

Concerns for national whooping cough epidemic

There are concerns that the Whooping Cough outbreak in Nelson Marlborough, with similar outbreaks in West Coast and Hawke's Bay, may develop into a nation-wide epidemic similar to 2004 - 2005.

Dr Jill Sherwood Medical Officer of Health for Nelson Marlborough District said, "So far this month we have had 27 cases with a further 16 still under investigation."

During September Nelson had 40 cases of whooping cough with none notified in Marlborough ...

Whooping Cough cases spreading

The number of new cases of pertussis in Westland district has now reduced significantly, however, the outbreak is spreading to other districts. The majority of new suspected pertussis notifications come from the Grey District.

The numbers of pertussis cases are also rising in the Nelson-Marlborough area so this may also contribute to the spread on the Coast, particularly into the Buller district...

Whooping cough is sweeping Wellington, with 124 cases this month, including a six-week-old baby who spent three weeks in hospital.

Case numbers of the potentially fatal respiratory disease have rocketed, from 15 in September and 36 in October, putting pressure on public health workers already trying to prevent a measles outbreak from taking hold.

Nationally, measles and whooping cough cases hit a five-year high in October.

"It's just difficult timing for a public health unit," medical officer of health Margot McLean said.

"Measles has being going all year in Auckland and is slowly making its way down the country. Pertussis [or whooping cough] has been going for several months in the South Island and is making its way up the country.
