Public health officials are urging people to check their immunisation status as measles cases start appearing in Wellington.

Tests are being done to confirm two probable cases (a Wellington adult and a Hutt Valley pre-schooler), following verification last week that a hospitality worker had contracted the highly infectious disease.

If confirmed, the latest cases would take the total number in the past month to four.

Medical officer of health Annette Nesdale said Regional Public Health had fielded a large number of calls from people worried they might have been exposed to the disease.

"So far we haven't identified any secondary cases but people would still be in the early stages. The first people, if they had contact on October 5, would be coming out with a rash about Wednesday..."

Auckland and Waitemata District Health Boards say there have been 248 confirmed or probable cases of measles in the region since late May...

More measles cases have been confirmed in Wellington as the infection spreads.

Two further cases of measles bring the total in Wellington to four since September 28. A fifth suspected case, in a child under five, was ruled out after testing.

Public health officials say neither of the new cases appears to be linked to an infected staff member at city gelato cafe Kaffee Eis who became ill recently...

Measles outbreak hits Waiheke Island

The measles outbreak which has infected more than 200 Aucklanders has now spread to Waiheke Island.

A 17-year-old resident on the island recently tested positive for the disease, Dawn Rigby, Manager of the Waiheke Trust said.

It is not known where the teenager contracted measles, but because of the school holidays his contact with others had been limited.

There were no other suspected cases on Waiheke...

Taranaki has recorded its first confirmed case of measles in 13 years, as outbreaks of the disease sweep the North Island.

The Taranaki District Health Board confirmed the laboratory-tested case in a New Plymouth person yesterday.

It said the Taranaki Public Health Unit had acted to minimise the risk of further spread after the person was diagnosed but would not release the person's age or sex.

It was the first case confirmed by laboratory tests since 1998, a spokeswoman said...

A Dunedin Hospital staff member has been diagnosed with measles, increasing the risk of an Otago outbreak, Southern District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Derek Bell said.

The female staff member had contact with patients for one shift last Monday, and then flew from Dunedin to Auckland on Tuesday, returning on Friday. She was diagnosed on Saturday, and was at present in isolation at home, Dr Bell said yesterday.

Air New Zealand had provided passenger details for the flights (NZ672 and NZ673) and Public Health South was contacting those in proximity to the person.

Close contacts of the hospital staff member had been isolated for two weeks, and patients were being contacted.

Sixty-two people were being contacted, although Dr Bell could not say how many of them were plane passengers...

The measles outbreak continues to spread in Auckland with the disease infecting an extra 75 victims in October.

Since the outbreak began in May, a total of 278 people have been infected in the region.

Of those, 53 people have been hospitalised.

The measles toll stood at 203 in the beginning of October...

10 measles cases across region

Health officials are warning about the spread of measles in Rotorua, Taupo and the Bay of Plenty.

There have been 10 confirmed cases across the region covered by the Bay of Plenty and Lakes District health boards since October.

Toi Te Ora medical officer of health Dr Neil de Wet said most cases had been in Rotorua and Tauranga and it was likely to spread through the region.

Nationally, there had been more than 400 confirmed cases this year and at least 70 required hospital treatment.

Dr de Wet said Toi Te Ora was following up with people who had been in close contact with those confirmed to have measles.

LATEST: After seven years measles-free, the MidCentral District Health Board has confirmed the first case of the disease confirmed at Palmerston North Hospital.

Medical officer of health Rob Weir said it was the first laboratory confirmed case in the district since 2004.

There have been 430 cases elsewhere in New Zealand this year, so it was not a surprise it had spread to MidCentral.

Public health staff have asked close contacts who are not vaccinated or immune to stay home for two weeks from the time they were exposed to the case.

Measles case suspected, teen treated

A TEENAGE boy was admitted to Gisborne Hospital on Saturday with a suspected case of measles.

The affected boy is a pupil at Gisborne Intermediate School and all children in his class who have not been immunised against measles have been instructed to stay at home for the week, says Tairawhiti District Health medical officer of health Dr Bruce Duncan.

This does not apply to other classes at the school, though parents with non-immunised children are advised to consider keeping their children at home this week.

Dr Duncan expects confirmation of the diagnosis by tomorrow or Wednesday.

'No-one wants measles for Xmas'

Health authorities are urging Aucklanders to get vaccinated to stop the city's measles outbreak spreading across the country over the Christmas holidays.

There have been 372 confirmed and probable cases of measles in Auckland since the end of May, with 64 people needing hospital treatment for the disease.

The clinical director of primary care at Auckland and Waitemata District Health Boards today urged Aucklanders to get immunised, warning the risk of measles spreading further is likely to increase as people leave the city for their Christmas holidays and large gatherings and celebrations occur.

"We would urge everyone to check that their own and their family's immunisations are up to date before they go on holiday, or catch up with family in other parts of the country," Dr Stuart Jenkins said.

"I'm sure the last thing anyone wants for Christmas this year is a case of measles, to pass measles on to someone else, or two weeks in quarantine trying to keep away from friends and family."

Wanganui public health officials are urging locals who have not been immunised against measles to get it done immediately.

While there have been no cases of measles recorded in the Wanganui health district yet, Ministry of Health officials say the country is in the grip of an epidemic of a disease that can be a killer.

Karen Howard, communicable disease nurse at the Whanganui District Health Board's public health centre, said the major concern was people heading off on summer holidays facing an increased risk of contracting measles.

Ms Howard said up until December 15, 2011 there had been 568 cases notified for the year, the highest number of cases since 1997. Most people affected - 78 per cent - live in the Auckland region.
