Seventeen people have been confirmed as having measles in Auckland, the second large outbreak in the city this year.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) medical officer of health Richard Hoskins said all cases were linked to Oratia Primary School in west Auckland, with three people requiring hospitalisation.

Almost all of those struck by the illness were not immunised...

More than 300 people have been quarantined since the start of a measles outbreak in Auckland.

And health officials say it is possible that not all of the 23 confirmed cases of the highly infectious disease are linked.

All 17 of the previously confirmed cases were connected to an outbreak in the Oratia District School community but Auckland Regional Public Health Service medical officer Dr Richard Hoskins said they were now seeing "a small number of cases that we haven't yet been able to link to Oratia".

Unimmunised pupils at Parnell College are the latest to be asked to stay at home after Oratia and Epsom Girls Grammar students were urged to avoid public areas. The Titirangi Plunket Playgroup was also cancelled from June 16 until June 23.

Hoskins said it was difficult to say exactly how many people had been quarantined in to stop the spread of the disease, however they were now working with more than 300 households and other contacts.

Three people have been hospitalised as a result of contracting measles.

The outbreak is the second largest in Auckland this year, after more than 40 people contracted measles earlier in the year.

Anyone who developed common symptoms such as a red rash, runny nose, cough, sore eyes or fever should contact their doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 before visiting a medical professional to minimise the spread of infection.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says there are signs that a measles outbreak is spreading further in Auckland.

The number of confirmed cases of the viral infection has risen to 26, with most linked to a pupil from Oratia Primary School, in West Auckland.

The student, who wasn't immunised, developed measles when returning from Britain through Singapore, and was exposed to other children at the school...

A measles outbreak in Auckland is worsening, with concerns new cases are spreading among plane passengers who travelled with an infected person.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service today said the number of confirmed cases of measles in the city had risen to 39.

Though infections were originally thought to be mainly limited to a school in Oratia, at least nine cases had now been detected in other places including several early childhood centres, it said.

Its medical officer of health Richard Hoskins said a measles-infected person had also entered Auckland on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok on June 19.

The person was in the early stages of the disease and may have infected fellow passengers, he said...

A measles outbreak at a Napier school resulted in nearly half the school's roll being sent home until they could prove they were immunised.

After a student contracted measles at Henry Hill School in Onekawa, the Hawke's Bay District Health Board sent home 126 of the 273 students until they could produce their immunisation record.

School principal John Webby said the girl was at school the day before her measles was diagnosed, "and it spreads so quickly," he said.

He said the health board made the decision that children who had not been immunised must stay away.

The school had a high rate of immunisation and most were able to return to school over the following days with the necessary documentation...

Five people have now been admitted to hospital as the numbers of measles cases in the Auckland region continues to grow.

Almost all instances of Auckland's latest measles outbreak have occurred in people who are unimmunised as the number infected with the disease reaches 76.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) Medical Officer of Health, Dr Richard Hoskins said it was never too late for children to catch up on immunisation.

"There is no treatment for measles, the only thing that can stop you catching measles is to get immunised."

Five of the 76 confirmed cases of the highly-infectious disease have required hospitalisation.

Three people who have come in contact with the disease are currently in quarantine.

"We continue to remind parents to take care and help stop measles spreading, especially during the school holidays," Hoskins said...

The outbreak appears to be centred on Te Awamutu and surrounding communities, and while a number of young people have become ill the source of infection is at this stage unknown.

Health authorities monitoring a Te Awamutu measles outbreak are using social media to track teens who might have been exposed.

And, if the virus gets out of control, a second dose of an immunisation against the virus could be brought forward,

Eight teenagers were struck down with measles on Thursday, and by last night there were 11 suspected cases.

Health authorities suspected none of the teens, some of whom attend Te Awamutu College, were immunised against the illness, which kills one in 1000.

Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said the DHB had turned to Facebook and other social networking sites to track down those who might have had contact with Te Awamutu College students in the last week of school.

"We would text every teen in the Waikato if we could."..

The number of confirmed measles cases in the Waikato has risen to 10.

Waikato DHB Medical Officer of Health Dr Dell Hood says most of those are confined to the Te Awamutu area, where an outbreak was first reported last week...

She says it's affecting high school students, and the schools are working with the DHB to contain the disease.

...Meanwhile, eight people are in quarantine in Auckland with the disease, taking the number of confirmed cases in the city to 94...

Waikato health authorities have confirmed an extra two cases of measles in the past two days.

A three-month-long outbreak of measles in Auckland is thought to have spread to Waikato.

It had 10 confirmed cases on Monday and was analysing a further five cases.

A Waikato medical officer of health, Anita Bell, says there are now 12 confirmed and a further three suspected cases...

A regional public health official in Auckland says an outbreak of measles there could spread across the country.

There are now 104 confirmed cases of the illness, which is 10 more than a week ago.

Dr Richard Hoskins says health agencies have seen 10 - 14 new cases each week for the past six weeks.

Nineteen cases of measles have been reported to Waikato DHB officials including one which hospitalised one student and left others in isolation.

Another probable case is pending as officials grapple to keep a stronghold on the virus which is now spreading from its base in Te Awamutu to as far as Otorohanga in the south and Huntly in the north.

Eight of the 19 cases were secondary caught from someone already contaminated and are linked to Otorohonga College and Pokuru School, southwest of Te Awamutu.

Dr Anita Bell, medical officer of health, said the probable case was identified in Huntly with links to Auckland.
One case has required hospitalisation.

There are several contacts in isolation...

There have now been 109 confirmed cases in Auckland, where the outbreak originated, and 19 confirmed and one suspected case in Waikato, one of which has required hospitalisation.

Cases have also been reported in Taupo and Northland.
