? Influenza Antiviral Resistance Testing
2009 Influenza A (H1N1): 2/286 (0.7)

Each virus contained the H275Y mutation conferring oseltamivir resistance. The two viruses were collected from two different patients whose clinical history and test results showed evidence of developed resistance during treatment rather than the contraction of a resistant virus. An additional 4 H275Y viruses have been collected and tested from one of these patients (data not represented).

Here are the highlights for last week (wk 13) in NYC:

? One influenza-associated pediatric death was reported in NYC during Week 13. For the current season, three influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported.
? Influenza activity in NYC remains elevated.
? Influenza-like-illness visits are at 3.8% of all weekly visits.
? Approximately 22% of all specimens submitted for influenza testing were positive for influenza; 281 specimens were positive for influenza A and 549 specimens were positive for influenza B. In addition, approximately 2% of specimens tested for respiratory syncytial virus were positive. Limited subtyping is showing an increase in influenza A H3N2.

? Nosocomial Respiratory Outbreaks
There were 11 laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks in long-term care facilities during Week 13, four each in the Bronx and Brooklyn and three in Queens. Influenza A was identified in five of the outbreaks, influenza B in four, and two facilities had residents with either influenza A or B. In addition, three facilities with outbreaks reported in previous weeks are seeing continued transmission.
