New York Firm Recalls Frozen Mini Quesadilla, Pizza, Cheese Steak and Other Snack Products -- E. Coli (31% of Ill Persons Hospitalized)

March 28, 2013 ? Rich Products Corporation, a Buffalo, NY firm, is recalling approximately 196,222 pounds of frozen chicken quesadilla and various other heat treated, not fully cooked frozen mini meals and snack items because they may be contaminated with E. coli O121, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following products are subject to FSIS recall:
7.2-oz. cartons of Farm Rich mini pizza slices with cheese pepperoni and sauce in pizza dough, UPC code 041322376909 with a best by date of May 15 or May 16, 2014.
22-oz. cartons of Farm Rich mini pizza slices with cheese pepperoni and sauce in pizza dough, UPC code 041322356437 with a best by date of May 15 or May 16, 2014.
18-oz. bags of Farm Rich mini quesadillas with cheese, grilled white meat chicken in a crispy crust, UPC code 041322356352 with a best by date of May 14, 2014.
21-oz. bags of Farm Rich philly cheese steaks with cheese, beef & onions in a crispy crust, UPC code 041322356345 with a best by date of May 13, 2014.

In addition, the following products, which fall under FDA jurisdiction, are also being recalled. FSIS is issuing this news release to make the public aware that these products are also considered potentially adulterated and should be properly discarded or destroyed.

22-oz. cartons of Farm Rich mozzarella bites in a pizzeria style crust, UPC code 041322374431 with a best by date of May 19, 2014.
7-oz. cartons of Farm Rich mozzarella bites in a pizzeria style crust, UPC code 041322376916 with a best by date of May 19, 2014.
22-oz. bags of Market Day Mozzarella Bites, UPC code 041322804358 with a best by date of May 12, 2014.

Each product package above contains the establishment number "EST. 27232" or "P-27232" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products subject to recall were produced between Nov. 12, 2012 and Nov. 19, 2012 then distributed for retail sale nationwide. FSIS and the establishment are concerned that some product may be present in household freezers...

March 28, 2013 - Rich Products Corporation of Buffalo, New York, is announcing a voluntary recall of Farm Rich? Mini Quesadillas (PC 35635), Farm Rich? Mini Pizza Slices (PC 35643 and PC 37690), Farm Rich? Philly Cheese Steaks (PC 35634), Farm Rich? Mozzarella Bites (PC 37443 and PC 37691) and Market Day? Mozzarella Bites (PC 80435), produced from November 12, 2012 to November 19, 2012 due to possible contamination with Escherichia coli O121 bacteria (?E. Coli O121?).

Symptoms of the illness include mild to severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Blood is often seen in the stool. Usually little or no fever is present. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within 5-10 days, certain individuals can develop a complication called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) which can cause the kidneys to fail. HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition could lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

The Farm Rich products were distributed in retail stores nationwide. Market Day? is a fundraising food cooperative that distributed the Mozzarella Bites. These products are partially baked, dough enrobed, snack items that consumers bake or microwave at home.

Farm Rich? Mini Pizza Slices are packaged in 22 oz. bags. The product code is 35643, the production date is November 15, 2012 with a Julian Date of 15822320 and November 16, 2012 with a Julian Date 1582 2321. The UPC Code is 041322356437 and the ?Best By? date on the package is May 15 or May 16, 2014.

The Farm Rich? Mini Pizza Slices are also packaged in a 7.2 oz. carton. Multistate Outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121 Infections Linked to Farm Rich Brand Frozen Food Products

A total of 24 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121 (STEC O121) have been reported from 15 states.

78% of ill persons are 21 years of age or younger.
33% of ill persons have been hospitalized. One ill person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, and no deaths have been reported.

Rich Products Corporation of Buffalo, New York, which previously announced a voluntary recall of certain Farm Rich? and Market Day? products is expanding its voluntary recall to include all products produced at its Waycross, Georgia plant with ?Best By? dates ranging from January 1, 2013 to September 29, 2014 due to possible contamination with Escherichia coli O121 bacteria (?E. coli O121?). Among persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from December 30, 2012 to March 18, 2013. Ill persons range in age from 2 years to 75 years, with a median age of 17 years. Eighty-one percent of ill persons are 21 years of age or younger. Fifty-six percent of ill persons are female. Among 23 persons with available information, 8 (35%) reported being hospitalized. Two ill people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, and no deaths have been reported.

Illnesses that occurred after March 10, 2013 might not be reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.

Among persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from December 30, 2012 to April 15, 2013. Ill persons range in age from one year to 75 years, with a median age of 17 years. Eighty-two percent of ill persons are 21 years of age or younger. Sixty percent of ill persons are female. Among 29 persons with available information, 9 (31%) reported being hospitalized. Two ill people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, and no deaths have been reported.

Illnesses that occurred after April 10, 2013 might not be reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.
