FORT CAMPBELL (WKRN) — Fort Campbell soldiers in Kentucky are being deployed to assist with COVID-19 efforts in New York.

The 531st Hospital Center is being deployed and will be able to offer a range of health care needs..

As of Wednesday night, nearly 33,000 cases had been confirmed in New York, an increase of more than 7,000 from the day before. At least 366 people have died. The city, impaired by the density that makes it one of the world's most vibrant places, bears the brunt of the impact, with more than 20,000 cases across the five boroughs as of Wednesday night. The mayor's office said the death toll had soared to 280, the biggest increase in deaths the city had seen so far - that's 28 percent of what NBC News estimates to be the total fatality number nationwide.

Herkimer County reports first coronavirus death

Herkimer County has reported its first death due to the coronavirus.

Public Health announced Thursday afternoon that the department had received word that an 85-year-old county resident with underlying health conditions had died of the virus. The resident was one of seven people in the county who have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Diane Ward, acting director of Herkimer County Public Health....

Coronavirus in NY: Deaths jump again to 519 in state’s deadliest day yet

Albany, N.Y. — Another 134 people have died from coronavirus in New York, bringing the statewide death toll to 519, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

A total of 6,481 people, about 14.5% of cases, are now hospitalized due to the virus. About 3.5% of the total cases, or 1,583 people, are in intensive care units, Cuomo said.

The state now has 44,635 confirmed cases, an increase of 7,377 overnight.

The news on deaths is sobering, Cuomo said during a press briefing in New York City. It’s the second day in a row the state set a new high point for deaths.

The number will continue to rise.

“It’s bad news. It’s tragic news,” Cuomo said. “It’s the worst news. But it is not unexpected news either.”...

Otsego County reports first coronavirus death

There has been a death of an Otsego County resident related to COVID-19, county Public Health Director Heidi Bond said Friday.

The Otsego County Department of Health was notified of the death Friday, Bond said. Details about the person’s age, any underlying medical conditions, how long they had the illness and if and where they were hospitalized could not be provided.

Doctor: Elmhurst Residents Are Contracting COVID-19 at an Alarming Rate

Elmhurst has become the epicenter of the coronavirus with many residents being infected, according to a doctor who has worked at Elmhurst Hospital for 20 years and has dealt with a flood of patients this month.

The physician, who did not want to be named, said that the first patients to come down with coronavirus and go to the hospital reside in the immediate area.

She said that the hospital soon struggled to keep pace with the influx and most people carrying the virus were sent home because their life was not in danger. Furthermore, this started happening before the city shut down.

She said that many of the infected people would then walk the streets of Elmhurst– some without masks and gloves– and then return to their densely populated homes carrying the virus...

Local Hospital ICUs Nearing Limit as COVID-19 Surges in NYC

A key, ever-fluctuating variable in the grim daily calculus facing a city racing against time to treat a rising tide of COVID-19 patients is the number of intensive care unit beds available.

On Thursday, in a city of 8.6 million people, that figure was 307.

Some 850 COVID-19 patients occupied ICU beds in hospitals across New York City that day — up from 525 three days earlier.

The state statistics, obtained by THE CITY, revealed stark numbers that underscored the urgent need for additional hospital capacity as more and more people get sick from coronavirus.

The details came to light as medical centers report being overwhelmed, well before the crisis is expected to hit its peak. State and city officials are scrambling to create more medical treatment space everywhere from CUNY campuses to the Javits Center as they press hospitals to increase the stock of critical care beds.
‘A Decisive Moment’

Without a marked increase in resources, the five boroughs are headed in the next eight days “to a decisive moment for the City of New York,” Mayor Bill de Blasio warned late Friday.

A state hospitalization survey obtained by THE CITY shows that of the 2,011 ICU beds in the city Thursday, just 15% remained available amid a surge of incoming patients...

Long Island overtakes South Korea in total number of COVID-19 cases

Long Islanders are more likely to have been tested for COVID-19 than people in South Korea, where aggressive early testing is credited with helping slow the spread of the pandemic there, a Newsday analysis shows.

As of Saturday, Nassau County had tallied 1,058 tests per 100,000 people, and Suffolk County had 812, while South Korea had 752 per 100,000, the analysis shows. New York City had 781.

The types of people tested, the timing of the tests and governmental responses to the findings are factors that may help explain why Long Island on Saturday passed South Korea in the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases, despite Nassau and Suffolk counties having a population 18 times smaller.

The Island’s count has topped 9,600 compared with 9,478 in South Korea, according to New York State and the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center...
