New York State to Start COVID-19 Testing, Gov. Cuomo Says

Published February 29, 2020 • Updated on February 29, 2020 at 4:40 pm
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday morning tweeted that his office "just received word that our test has been approved by the FDA"

New York State is ready to start testing for potential cases of the novel coronavirus, joining New Jersey and Connecticut, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.

The news came hours before New York City health officials announced the results of the latest possible COVID-19 case in the city. The eighth person tested in New York City by the CDC does not have novel coronavirus, city health officials said Saturday afternoon.

Governor Cuomo Issues Statement Regarding Novel Coronavirus in New York
STATEMENTHEALTHPUBLIC SAFETY

"This evening we learned of the first positive case of novel coronavirus — or COVID-19 — in New York State. The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her home. The patient has respiratory symptoms, but is not in serious condition and has been in a controlled situation since arriving to New York.

"The positive test was confirmed by New York's Wadsworth Lab in Albany, underscoring the importance of the ability for our state to ensure efficient and rapid turnaround, and is exactly why I advocated for the approval from Vice President Pence that New York was granted just yesterday.

"There is no cause for surprise -- this was expected. As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York.

"Last week I called for the Legislature to pass a $40 million emergency management authorization to confront this evolving situation -- I look forward to its swift passage.

"There is no reason for undue anxiety -- the general risk remains low in New York. We are diligently managing this situation and will continue to provide information as it becomes available."

We have said from the beginning that it is likely we will see more positive cases of the Coronavirus. We are working closely with our state and federal partners to ensure we are taking the highest precautions to keep New Yorkers safe."

The man is a resident of New Rochelle and works as a lawyer at a law firm in New York City, according to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The patient was initially admitted to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville and later transferred to a New York City hospital.

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo urged calm on Wednesday morning as he said that six people in New York state have tested positive for the new coronavirus - most of whom have connections to a Westchester County man who became infected.

The six include the man whose case was announced Tuesday, his three family members and a neighbor. On Sunday, the state's first case was confirmed in a New York City woman who had returned from Iran.

"There is no need for undue anxiety," the governor said. "There are going to be dozens and dozens and dozens of people (infected)."....:tiphat:https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Cuomo-Six-people-in-New-York-test-positive-for-15104198.php

...That patient, an attorney in his 50s, is in critical condition at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The man has an underlying respiratory condition which made him more vulnerable to the virus, said Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health.

The man has connections across New York. He works at the Lewis and Garbuz law firm in Manhattan and his family lives in suburban Westchester County. His 20-year-old son attends Yeshiva University in Manhattan and his 14-year-old daughter attends SAR Academy and High School in the Bronx.

Now the man’s wife, son, daughter, and a neighbor who drove the sick man to the hospital are all infected with coronavirus, Cuomo said.
