#61: From OSHA in response to influenza pandemic scenarios ...

Yes, the classic "to be" generic guideliness which don't subject any country to realy accomplish it ...

Same as the reality "on the local field" of the pandemics preparations guidelines.

We need an international law of exact protocols any country must accomplish in a XXdays schedule from the phase 5, and if not realized, there must be sanctions -
- obviously, such legislation have 0 chances to pass ...

Mitchell Wiener is being treated with an experimental device designed to stimulate a flu victim's immune system using ultraviolet beams, relatives said Saturday.

Called a Hemo-Modulator
, the washing machine-sized device exposes infected blood to a precise amount of ultraviolet rays, rendering the pathogens inactive.

The treated blood - now acting as a vaccine - is then reinserted into the victim, triggering the immune system.

"We're trying to treat his blood with some light and trying to stimulate his immune system," said Tom Petrie, of Energex Systems, a New Jersey-based firm that created the technology. "We did some experiments with H1N1 and had some success."

Petrie said Wiener, 55, has undergone the 30-minute treatment twice so far at Flushing Hospital - Friday night and again Saturday.

Wiener's condition has improved slightly, Petrie said.

I think many people here on FT have been following his progress closely. I too am very sad to hear of his death, especially after reading that his son saw some hope today for recovery. May we all hold him and his family in the Light.

Maybe, maybe they overreact now because of fear.

But for the airborne/droplet/surface transmission is usualy enaugh wearing a respirator and gloves.

So the situation remains potentialy clouded.

if the virus are the same as in the several hundreds of pupils infected, staying at home and spreading it to their family, than no full gear are needed because of this virus at the hospital.

If his virus is maybe suspect, or his body is very weakened from the illness and the collateral insurged additional illnesses, it is needed an very strict preventive shielding wearing when entering the room.

We can ask the folks at the hospital, but now is subentered the new informations law about public officials info news, so it would be more dificult to got a public detailed information prior their willingly release brifing ...

Eye protection is also necessary as the conjunctiva are a portal of entry and people do rub their eyes; usually not with freshly washed hands. The influenza virus can also theoretically be transmitted from cloth.

A properly fitted and worn respirator reduces the risk of infection to a far greater extent than a mask. Note that respirators are being worn in an isolation room, which has negative pressure, 6-12 fresh air exchanges per hour and air that is not recirculated to other areas, further reducing the risk of infection independent of respirator use.

Exposure time, distance and frequency can be directly correlated with infection risk. Presumeably, a family staying in an isolation room would have far greater contact with the infected patient than staff, who limit their time, and wear gowns, gloves, masks or respirators and eye protection. And, an immune system that can fight off a virus one day, may not be so competent another day. Thus, one of the family members could become another source of infection.

The latest CDC infection control guidance for care of patients with H1N1 in a health care setting calls for placing the patient in an airborne isolation room plus standard, contact and respiratory precautions which include gloves, gown, N-95 respirator, and eye protection. None of these measures individually or together, eliminates infection risk.
http://cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidelines_infection_control.htm

The guidance specifically states that isolation precautions should be maintained for 7 days from symptom onset, or until the resolution of symptoms, whichever is greater.

Very sad.

First Swine Flu Death Reported in New York

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104763

Mitchell Wiener, age 55, a dedicated educator, had no recognized risk factors. We have come to know his face, his history, his family and his fate. We know some measure of this loss. But we don't have the means to understand it.

Mitchell Wiener has become the Paul Revere of swine flu. If he can die from the advancing tide of this "mild" illness, so can many of us.

Yes, so very sad. And so ironic that Mr. Weiner was told it would create a "panic" if his school were closed because of the flu outbreak, but now his death may create the "panic" the NYC authorities had hoped to avoid.

May take a while yet. I was speaking with a friend right after reading this and asked if she had heard that the principal in New York had died, "you know, the one who was hospitalized with swine flu." She said, "They still have swine flu in New York?"

Yes, that's the sound of disgust and frustration you hear.

His death was directly linked to a misguided propaganda campaign, and I am sure the VERY large lawsuit will serve as a wake-up call to agencies playing games with the lives of others.

agreed - this tragic end was the direct result of the very misinformation all of us at FT find so anathema to all we attempt to do here - provide early warning and factual information - not just for us and our own - but for all.

New advice from the NYC Health Department:

?We are now seeing a rising tide of flu in many parts of New York City,? said New York City Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden. ?With the virus spreading widely, closing these and other individual schools will make little difference in transmission throughout New York City, but we hope will help slow transmission within the individual school communities. Given the large number of cases, it is entirely possible that in the coming days there will be people with severe illness from flu, particularly among people who have underlying health problems.?

?Our primary goal is to reduce the number of people who get seriously ill from the flu,? Frieden continued. ?If you have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, emphysema, and asthma and have been exposed to someone with flu, see your doctor. Flu spreads, and that is what the H1N1 virus is doing. While the symptoms of H1N1 (SO) flu seem to resemble those of seasonal flu so far, the H1N1 virus appears to be spreading more rapidly at this time. Only time will tell how far, wide and long it will spread.? ....

...In addition to suspending some schools with unusual clusters of illness, the Health Department advises any New Yorker who has flu symptoms and also has an underlying health condition such as asthma, pregnancy, emphysema or other lung disease or diabetes; a compromised immune system or cancer; to seek medical treatment. In addition, if an individual with such a medical condition has household or other close contact with someone with influenza, they should see their doctor to determine whether preventive medicine is needed. For students, staff, and household members of affected students and staff at schools which have been closed, those who have an underlying medical condition as stated above should also see their doctors to discuss the need for preventive medicine.

My condolences also.

In the lawsuit they can added the obviously initial wrong decision of not stop/quarantine/closed the non goods carry plains and early enaugh the schools for at least 10 days.

I would make an closure of 21 days, not that narrowed sci 5-7 days: they did a first closing a week, than reopened a week, than closed a week (their explanations were: a "mild" illness, or "its already into").

It could spare lives, and additionaly slowed it, because than the illness had very few cases.

I strongly hope that other states, not or small afected, will change the practice to "more closures early enaugh", as did or tried the Chinese/Japanese/...

I suspect also this report could be totally fabricated. The patient has been treated with ribavirin, a well known antiviral drug, according other media outlets, after other drugs failed to work.

The risk of a widespread propagation of a novel pathogen should be measured with great honesty and with a renewed political leadership.

No shortcut to easy solutions.

For me, it is very upsetting because he wanted that school closed. Dr. Niman put it very eloquently:

His death was directly linked to a misguided propaganda campaign...

so true. so sad. My heart goes out to his loved one.
