Re: Discussion: New York City: Doctor who's returned from West Africa hospitalized with Ebola-like symptoms
NYC Mayor having a news conference now. I see it CNBC
He says;
Casual contact can not transmit this disease,
Health dept has visited places on Dr. Spencer's itinerary,
If anyone has visited any of the 3 ebola stricken countries and has symptoms of ebola (or a loved one) - call 911 or go to emergency room,
Asking all New Yorkers to get flu shot because flu and ebola have some similar symptoms and this will make diagnosis easier later.
Dr. Bassett:
Team effort in NYC,
Patient is stable, in isolation,
CDC confirms ebola in its testing,
Lists places where Dr. went but no spelling so I am not sure enough to list here....,
de Blasio:
Thanking staff at Bellevue,
Dr. Raju from hospital:
Great collaboration,
Spencer is getting excellent care,
Protecting health care workers.
Dr. Khabbaz from CDC:
Flew in last night with a couple of other CDC people,
Will be working closely with everyone.
Dr. Bassett:
Last contact Spencer had with ebola patients was October 10,
Left Guinea on October 14,
Arrived in NYC October 17,
Between 10-11 am yesterday Spencer detected 100.3 fever.
de Blasio;
Says people can only transmit ebola to others when they have a fever.
Khabbaz:
Improving protocols as experiences show necessity.
de Blasio:
Says NYC is going to be directly monitoring people who are arriving from 3 stricken ebola countries,
People will not be asked if they are in the US legally,
People will be treated even if they can not pay or have no insurance.
Bassett:
Duncan's family in Dallas did not get sick.
de Blasio:
3 contacts under quarantine, all well
Dr. Raju:
Someone can have ebola virus in body but not at a high enough viral load to test positive in blood. Tests without symptoms may result in a negative result.
De Blasio:
Much more prepared than hospital in Dallas because have been training for 2.5 months.
Dr. Raju:
Highly skilled and highly trained nurses working in ebola isolation area. No newbies involved in Spencer's care.
de Blasio:
Again repeating that only symptomatic people can transmit ebola.
Says only transmitted through bodily fluids.
List of visits:
The Meatball Shop on Greenwich - inspection still pending
The Blue Bottle Coffee on the Highline is cleared to open
The Gutter bowling alley in Brooklyn is cleared to open
Insists on cooperation from any person with suspected ebola and will compel them if necessary.
NYC will directly anyone who is returning from the 3 ebola stricken countries.
Conference over.
