Confirmed case of measles in Manhattan, NYC DOH says
By Jesse Zanger
Updated on: May 5, 2026 / 3:23 PM EDT / CBS New York

There's been a confirmed measles case in Manhattan, health officials said Tuesday.

"The NYC Health Department is responding to a measles case in Manhattan through its robust disease surveillance and reporting system, working to identify and notify people who may have been exposed," a New York City Department of Health spokesperson said. "The risk to the general public is low due to high vaccination coverage among New Yorkers and there have been no reports of secondary cases. This is a reminder of the importance of vaccination, which is the best protection against measles."

The person with measles in this most recent case was not vaccinated.

Health officials did not give specifics about where the person had visited in New York City.

It's the fifth confirmed case of measles in the city so far this year. Officials say all of the cases have been related to international travel. Last year, there were 20 measles cases citywide.

Young child infected with measles in Nassau County; first case in county since 2024
WABC
Eyewitness News
Tue, May 5, 2026 at 4:21 PM EDT

Health officials in Nassau County have confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated child under the age of 5.

It's the county's first reported measles case since 2024.

The Nassau County Department of Health says it's working with the New York State Department of Health to investigate how the child was exposed and to prevent the virus from spreading further.

"The Nassau County Department of Health is closely investigating the case, including any potential exposures, and taking the necessary steps to prevent the spread of measles," said Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman.

She warned that measles can be serious, sometimes leading to pneumonia, brain inflammation or hospitalization, and urged families to make sure vaccinations are up to date.

The state's health commissioner said many of New York's prior cases involved exposure outside of the state.

"Because immunization rates in New York state are pretty good, we aren't seeing wide community-based outbreaks, that's important," said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald.

Immunization rates are dropping and measles cases in New York tripled between 2024 and 2025.

In 2025, there were 20 confirmed cases in New York City and 28 in New York State outside of NYC for 48 total. In 2026, there have been five confirmed cases of measles in New York City and five in New York State outside of NYC for 10 total...

Measles Scare Hits Hell's Kitchen After Sick Diner Visits Norma
By Damon Caldwell
Published on May 06, 2026

A casual Saturday night out in Hell's Kitchen has turned into a public health headache. New York City health officials are investigating a confirmed measles case in Manhattan tied to a person who dined at Norma, a Sicilian restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, on Saturday, April 25, between 5 and 8 p.m.

The person later tested positive for measles, and the city's contact-tracing team is now working to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed during that window. So far there are no reports of secondary cases, and officials say the overall risk to the general public remains low because most New Yorkers are vaccinated. Anyone who was at the restaurant during that time is being urged to watch for fever, cough and rash and to call ahead before seeking medical care so providers can prepare...

Allegany County Department of Health Issues Updated Public Health Advisory Regarding Measles Response

BELMONT, NY — The Allegany County Department of Health (ACDOH) is providing an update regarding its ongoing measles response within the county.

Through routine contact tracing and proactive monitoring, public health officials have identified a total of two (2) confirmed positive cases and ten (10) presumed positive cases of measles. All current cases remain localized within the Town of New Hudson. Broad community risk across Allegany County remains low.

ACDOH is sharing this geographic update so that residents in and around the Town of New Hudson have the information they need to monitor their family’s health and double-check their vaccination status. Health officials have provided information to our local healthcare partners in the area to coordinate educational guidance, support services, and convenient access to vaccination.

“Our priority is keeping our communities informed, supported, and protected,” said Public Health Director Tyler Shaw. “Because measles spreads easily, early awareness is key. We are encouraging anyone who feels unwell or believes they may have been exposed to stay home, reach out to their healthcare provider, and allow our team to support them with safe, confidential guidance.”...
