Syracuse, N.Y. -- Eight more cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have been reported in Onondaga County, bringing the total number of cases for the year to 23.

Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes an uncontrollable, violent cough lasting several weeks or even months.

The latest cases include seven children and one adult located throughout the county, said Dr. Cynthia Morrow, the county?s health commissioner. All the previous cases this year involved children...

The Onondaga County health commissioner says 13 more cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, have been reported in school children, bringing the total for the year to 36. That's three times the number of last year...

A recent rise in whooping cough cases in Monroe County could signal the start of an outbreak, public health officials say. The highly contagious infection has caused outbreaks this year in the Syracuse area and elsewhere. Pertussis, as it is officially known, has killed nine infants in California this year ? and killed one infant in Monroe County last year.

Ten lab-confirmed cases of pertussis were reported in July and August in Monroe County, after just two cases in the first half of the year, according to the County Department of Health. But there are likely additional sick people who haven?t seen a doctor, said Dr. Ghinwa Dumyati, epidemiologist for the department. By comparison, there were seven cases here in all of 2009 and six in 2008...

ALBANY, N.Y. ? The New York State Department of Health is warning parents to be on the lookout for pertussis, a disease that starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a runny nose and cough.

Dr. Debra Blog says pertussis, commonly called "whooping cough" because of the noise made after an intense coughing attack, is coming on strong in New York.

"Compared with the first 8 months of last year, we're seeing 380 cases roughly, versus 180 last year," said Dr. Blog. "So, we are seeing an increase. As you know, it's been in the news in California, so thank goodness we're not seeing anything quite like that..."

Confirmed Cases of Whooping Cough

Whooping cough has been on the rise in the rise in Monroe County since July and now there is a confirmed case in the East Irondequoit School District.

According to the superintendent, who sent a letter home to parent, the case is at the middle school.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. ? The Jefferson County Public Health Service has confirmed 10 cases of pertussis in the County. After an initial case was reported 10/29/10, the Public Health Service was informed 11/08/10 that an additional five cases had been identified from the period 11/05/10 and on. On 11/09/10 Public Health received notice of four additional cases. Nine are from the southern Jefferson County area with ages ranging from 5 ? 17 years; all attend Belleville ? Henderson Central School. One case is also located in the Carthage area. One has been hospitalized and all are recovering...

Jefferson County Public Health Service has been so busy with cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, that it has had to bring on a handful of extra helpers to assist with tracking the disease.

Public Health has three full-time staff members, some temporary workers, three people from the state Department of Health and an epidemiologist from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention working on following up with families and schools that have been exposed to the disease...

Jefferson County in northern New York is undergoing a large scale outbreak of whooping cough / pertussis. The first cases were noted November 8. In a press release November 22, the Jefferson County Department of Public Health announced that 150 cases had been confirmed.

That number have climbed rapidly...

Public Health seeks assistance in tracking pertussis cases

Jefferson County Public Health Service needs more people to staff phones to help track where instances of pertussis, or whooping cough, are coming from.

Earlier this week the agency reached out to emergency responders to assist with making calls to people who tested positive for pertussis to see with whom they had been in contact. Faith E. Lustik, health planner, said many full-time public health employees are working overtime since the emergency responders have yet to respond to the outreach...

Jefferson County, a rural upstate New York county with a population of around 119,000, has become a national hot spot with its current whooping cough outbreak. Since the first cases were reported on November 8, 463 cases of pertussis have been confirmed. Neighboring Lewis County has experienced 7 cases, as well. To place this outbreak in perspective, as of November 6 the Centers for Disease Control had recorded 532 cases in all of New York State for the entire year...
