New outbreak of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 reported at Achimota

Accra, April 4, GNA - Thirteen pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 confirme= d cases, have been reported at the Achimota Hospital which is a designated Influenza Sentinel Site.

Saint John's School at Achimota has recorded nine of the confirmed cases with the rest coming from Achimota, Alogboshie, Mile Seven and Tesano= .. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Accra on Monday, Dr Cynthia Kwaakye-Maclean, Ga West District Health Director confirmed the cases and said they were all being managed. She said public education had been extended to the school and other communities affected.

"We have enough Tamaflu (the drug for H1N1) and we are administering the medicines to them in addition to intensive public education," she add= ed. Dr George Mensah, Acting Accra Metropolitan Director of Health, also confirmed the recorded cases in the district. He said the situation was under control with the administering of Tamaflu drugs...

At a time when the country has its hands filled with an overwhelming outbreak of the deadly cholera pandemic, there have been fresh recorded cases of the H1N1 influenza at the Achimota Hospital.

Confirming the story to The Chronicle yesterday, Mr. Michael Garr, Head of Disease Control Unit at the Achimota Hospital, said the hospital had recorded 15 new cases, 11 from the St. John's Grammar Senior High School, with the rest of the cases drawn from Tesano, Achimota, Alogboshie and Mile 7.

According to him, information had been sent to the Ga West District Assembly to intensify education on the disease.

Swine flu cases increased at Achimota hospital

Reported cases of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, keeps increasing at the Achimota Hospital in Accra.

Hospital authorities say they have five more new cases bringing the number of reported cases to 18 since the disease broke out again last week.

Disease Control Officer at the Achimota Hospital Michael Alexander Garr, who disclosed this to Asempa News said 11 of the cases were from the St John?s Grammar Senior High School.

The rest are from areas such as Abeka Lapaz, Alogboshie, Achimota and Tesano.

Mr. Garr said that the patients have been treated and discharged to their various houses.

Mr. Garr says the Achimota hospital in collaboration with the Ga West District Health Directorate will soon fumigate the St John?s Grammar Senior High School.

Achimota hospital records more H1N1 cases


Authorities at the Achimota Hospital in Accra say the number of recorded cases of the H1N1 influenza, also known as the swine flu has increased.

Five cases have been recorded since last week, bringing the total number of cases to twenty-three (23) since Asempa News begun reporting the issue some three weeks ago.

The Disease Control Officer at the Achimota Hospital Michael Alexander Garr, who disclosed this to Asempa News, said 13 of the cases were from the St John?s Grammar School.

The rest are from areas such as Abeka Lapaz, Alogboshie, Achimota and Tesano.

Mr. Garr said that the patients have been treated and discharged.

He added that the ages of the patients range from two months to forty-one years. Mr. Garr has therefore advised the public to be vigilant.
