TOLEDO, Ohio - A local woman is dead possibly from complications of H1N1.

Larry Vasko of the Toledo Lucas County Health Department tells Fox Toledo News, Mandy Kimbler died Thursday at Toledo Hospital. The woman had given birth to twins earlier in the week.

Vasko says the cause of Kimbler's death is 'suspected to be complications from H1N1' or Swine Flu.

First suspected death from swine flu reported in Lucas County

A young woman who recently delivered twins died Thursday of what is suspected to be complications from H1N1, possibly the first death from so-called swine flu in Lucas County, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department confirmed Friday.

Mandy Kimpler died Thursday at Toledo Hospital, which she had entered on Oct. 25 because she was having breathing problems that her doctors suspected were caused by bronchitis, said her sister, Kelli Emhiser.

In order to treat her symptoms, she was put in a medically-induced coma, but when the treatments proved tough on the twins - Bradley and Brayden - they were delivered 11 weeks early on Oct. 26.

Larry Vasko, the health department's deputy commissioner, said whether Ms. Kimpler had H1N1 will be confirmed within a matter of days.

Pregnant women are among those at highest risk for H1N1, and they and their spouses are encouraged to get the vaccine. Those with children younger than 6 months; those aged 6 months to 24 years; health-care workers; and those aged 24 to 65 with chronic medical conditions are among others who are recommended to be vaccinated.

"We really need to stress the importance of vaccines in our community," Mr. Vasko said. "We need to get pregnant women in and their spouses in."

The health department is holding a media conference this afternoon to discuss the death.

Family copes with loss of new Toledo mom to flu
Benefit set to pay twin boys' medical bills

If not for a virus called H1N1 and better known as swine flu, Mandy Kimbler of Toledo was to embark upon her new year as the new mother of twins.

While the 24-year-old Mrs. Kimbler did give birth to her boys - Brayden and Bradley - they arrived Oct. 26, nearly 11 weeks premature of her early January due date. She was in a medically induced coma at the time of the cesarean section and being treated for the influenza.

On Nov. 5, Mrs. Kimbler died at Toledo Hospital of which doctors presumed to be complications from H1N1. The official cause of death was Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. She never saw her newborns.

"Never got to see them, never got to hold them," Teri Emahiser, Mrs. Kimbler's mother, recalled yesterday as she fought back tears. "The thing that hurts the most is she never got to see the boys."

Now two months later, family members say the twins are out of the hospital and doing well. However, medical bills for Mrs. Kimbler and the twins are piling up.

That burden has fallen greatest on Mrs. Kimbler's husband, David Kimbler. Mr. Kimbler, 26, is living with his grandmother in Springfield Township with the twins and the Kimblers' 3-year-old daughter, Mahala.

Further jolting everyone's emotions, Mahala was diagnosed with H1N1 shortly after her mother's death. Thankfully, she made a successful recovery after receiving treatment with the antiviral drug Tamiflu, family members said.

Mr. Kimbler had health insurance for his family, yet the mounting hospital expenses quickly stretched beyond his financial means. He is currently on leave from his job as a United Parcel Service driver to care for the newborns...(Click on source link to read more)
