Influenza in the state was at low activity by several indicators:
? Outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI): Twenty-five of the 29 sentinel outpatient provider sites reported a total of 9,620 patient visits, of which 168 (1.7%) were identified as visits for ILI2. See graph below displaying the comparison of statewide ILI activity to national ILI activity
? ILI Activity by State Health Regions: by NMDOH regions within the state (refer to page 3 table footnote defining the regions by county). Weekly ILI ranged from 1.0% (NE Region) to 4.1% (SE Region).
? Laboratory tests for influenza: The Scientific Lab Division (SLD) has reported no respiratory samples positive for influenza by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or culture for the week ending October 19, 2013.
? Influenza-related deaths: There have been no laboratory confirmed influenza-related deaths, adult or pediatric, in New Mexico during the week ending October 19, 2013.
? Geographic Spread of Influenza in the State: NMDOH reported the state influenza activity level as ?Sporadic? to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Border Surveillance:
The border region includes 11 influenza sentinel surveillance sites within 100 kilometers (60 miles) of US/Mexico border. All sites in the Border Influenza Surveillance Network are community-based outpatient clinics that report the amount of influenza-like illness (ILI) 2 seen at each individual location on a weekly basis. All results from rapid tests conducted on-site and from specimens sent to a public health laboratory for testing are included. The sites reported a total of 4692 patient visits during this week, of which 12 (0.3%) were positive for ILI.
There is no positive virologic activity to report during this week.
