<!-- close Story Headline --><!-- add story text -->ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? State health officials said Thursday the virus that causes stomach flu is likely what caused more than two dozen patients and staff members at Albuquerque's Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital to become sick.

The New Mexico Department of Health's Scientific Lab Division made the determination after testing samples from the hospital.

Health Secretary Catherine Torres blamed the outbreak on norovirus, which is commonly known as the 24-hour stomach flu and occasionally can spread between patients and hospital staff.

"Kaseman Hospital acted quickly in reporting the illnesses to the Department of Health and we will continue to work together to prevent further spread of this illness," she said.

So far, 27 people have reported becoming sick.

[/FONT](Santa Fe) ? The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed that cases of norovirus have been occurring around the state. No deaths have been attributed to these infections, but several hospitalizations have occurred. The department is recommending that everyone take precautions, especially around the very young, elderly and immunocompromised who are at risk for more serious illness due to norovirus infection.

"Washing your hands is one of the best ways to protect yourself from norovirus," said State Epidemiologist Michael Landen, M.D. "If you have norovirus infection , stay home to avoid passing it on to others and definitely keep away from people in long-term care facilities."
