H1N1 flu confirmed at two schools
Three cases of the H1N1 flu virus have been confirmed by the state health department in schoolchildren in two New Mexico communities.
Two students from Los Alamos Middle School have tested positive for the virus and that school?s nurse reports that 80 students were absent from classes Thursday.
One kindergarten student attending Kirtland Early Childhood Center near Farmington also has tested positive for H1N1.
The health department announced Thursday that it will no longer test school cases for H1N1 unless the patients are hospitalized.
?We expected to see H1N1 cases when students returned to school, and our advice remains the same,? said department Secretary Alfredo Vigil, MD.
Students and staff are being urged to stay home from school if they show signs of the flu and to remain home until 24 hours after their fever has broken.
Frequently hand washing and covering mouths and noses while coughing can also slow the spread of the virus.
