NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, was found in chickens at a poultry facility in eastern New Mexico, according to the New Mexico Livestock Board (NMLB), in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

Initial testing of the facility was performed on April 10 for the presence of HPAI. Further testing was needed to confirm the presence of HPAI at the facility. All birds on the infected premises will be “depopulated,” meaning they will be euthanized.
....Officials did not identify the facility in New Mexico that was impacted or specify how many chickens were infected. Earlier this month a facility in Texas, located near the New Mexico state line, also detected bird flu in its chickens, according to the Associated Press. Dairy cows in New Mexico and seven other states have also been found to have bird flu...:tiphat:

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI H5N1 related events. Affected population counts are based on estimated inventories from the date the outbreak was first reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health. HPAI events are now closed and control areas have been released in the following States: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. These States have not had any recent HPAI events and have demonstrated: • Required surveillance in the State and control areas has been completed with negative results for HPAI. As a precaution, additional enhanced surveillance may continue in the State and area. • Depopulation of infected premises has been completed and appropriate disposal was implemented or completed. • Cleaning and disinfection of the infected premises has been completed (including, but not limited to, outside areas of premises, equipment, trucks, and other fomites). Note (26/10/2022): After reassessment by field investigators, outbreak OB_107904 has been designated as non-poultry premises and subsequently removed from this event.

Bird Flu Found In Backyard Poultry Flock In Bernalillo County

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) has detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly known as “bird flu,” in a non-commercial backyard poultry flock in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

Bird flu is a serious and highly contagious disease affecting birds that can cause significant mortality in both wild and domestic bird populations.

Over 40 birds from a nearly 50-bird flock – including chickens, ducks and geese – have died. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Samples are being sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories for confirmation...

Honk Kong Press Release

Import of poultry meat and products from areas in US suspended
************************************************** **
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (April 29) that in view of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) about outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Curry County of the State of New Mexico and Sheboygan County of the State of Wisconsin in the United States (US), the CFS has instructed the trade to suspend the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the above-mentioned areas with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong.

A CFS spokesman said that according to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 12 290 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat, and about 1.19 million poultry eggs from the US in the first three months of this year.

"The CFS has contacted the American authority over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the WOAH and the relevant authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
