A Royal Caribbean cruise ship scheduled to dock in Bayonne, New Jersey, early Friday has at least a dozen Chinese nationals on board in isolation who will be tested for coronavirus, a source familiar with the ship said.

Some of the passengers, who are returning from the Bahamas on the ship, have pulmonary issues, according to the source.

They will be tested for the virus when the ship docks at the New Jersey port.

Sick passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship containing 'isolated' Chinese nationals will be tested for coronavirus when it docks in Bayonne, New Jersey, this morning.

At least a dozen Chinese tourists have been put into isolation, reports the New York Post, while some passengers are said to be suffering from pulmonary issues.

It is unclear whether the unwell passengers will be held on board while tests are carried out, or whether others will be allowed to disembark from the ship.

It is also unclear if the unwell passengers had recently visited mainland China.

The ship, Anthem of the Seas, is scheduled to arrive at the port next to New York city at 6am EST.

The vessel set off from Bayonne, New Jersey, on January 27 for a 12-day cruise taking in Puerto Rico, the Dutch Antilles, Antigua, St Lucia and St Kitts Island, before returning to New York.

[h=1]4 Chinese Travelers on NJ Cruise Ship Head to Newark Hospital Out of Caution: Officials[/h] [h=2]No one in New Jersey has been found with the virus and three out of five patients in NYC were tested negative[/h] [h=4]Updated 31 mins ago[/h] More than two dozen Chinese nationals who traveled aboard a cruise ship that returned to New Jersey were screened for signs of the new virus that have sicked tens of thousands in mainland China and four of them have been transported to the hospital.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis tells NBC New York that one of the four travelers that had come from China for the Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas cruise through the Caribbean had a fever on the cruise. The person was given Tylenol and the fever went away.

Three others are under close observation for their health and they were taken to University Hospital in Newark, which has negative-pressure isolation rooms, the mayor said.

”Four of the 27 Royal Caribbean passengers screened for coronavirus after the cruise ship docked in Bayonne on Friday morning were sent to hospitals for further evaluation, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

The other 23 were cleared and permitted to disembark from the Anthem of the Seas along with the ship’s other passengers, who said they were unaware of the coronavirus concerns until being alerted by news reports.”

Considering the indications of efficient spread of the virus on shipboard, as evidenced by the cruise ship currently quarantined in Yokohama harbor, this seems grotesquely irresponsible.
A two day delay in disembarkation to test the infected is not a huge inconvenience against the risk of distributing a mass of carriers across the east coast of the country.

Here's the statement from Royal Caribbean:
We appreciate the CDC’s abundance of caution and their partnership. We understand CDC intends to test samples from four guests for coronavirus. None of the four guests showed any clinical signs or symptoms of coronavirus while they were onboard our ship. One had tested positive onboard for Influenza A. Our records indicate the guests had not been in China since January 26 — 14 days ago. All other guests have been permitted to disembark as usual. We have also been cleared by authorities to depart on our next cruise as usual. However, to reassure concerned guests, we will delay our departure until tomorrow, when we expect to receive conclusive test results from CDC.

CREW MEMBER FOUND DEAD

Meanwhile, law enforcement sources told WNBC on Saturday that a 54-year-old crew member, a Filipino national, was found dead in an engine room of the ship last weekend.

Authorities don't believe the man's death is connected to the coronavirus scare as he didn't show symptoms of the illness, but they're awaiting an autopsy and treating his death with an "abundance of caution."

According to WNBC, the man's body was kept in a refrigerated compartment on the ship before it was sent to Newark for a "rush" autopsy...:tiphat:https://1010wins.radio.com/articles/royal-caribbean-may-delay-cruise-after-coronavirus-scare

That's good. I hope they remain negative. I wonder if there will be any followup testing? I'm guessing no.
