New Jersey officials warn of potential measles exposure at Newark Airport

​NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Officials are alerting residents about someone who visited New Jersey while in the infectious stage of measles.

The New Jersey Health Department says the person passed through Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal B on Sunday October 19, between 2:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Officials recommend anyone who thinks they were exposed or are ill to call the health department before seeing a doctor to avoid what could be a further spread of germs.

They say potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as Nov. 9.

No additional associated cases in New Jersey have been identified, according to the health department.

Since the beginning of 2025, New Jersey has had a total of 10 confirmed cases of measles reported, according to officials. In 2024, seven cases were reported.​..

NJ Health Department Alerts Residents of New Potential Exposures from a Measles Case Who Traveled Through Newark Liberty International Airport, Urges Individuals to Stay Up to Date on Vaccines

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is alerting residents about potential exposures associated with a newly identified case of measles in a non-NJ resident who traveled in transit through Newark Liberty International Airport while infectious. Individuals – especially parents, guardians, health care providers, and caregivers – are urged to be aware of the symptoms of this highly contagious virus and to ensure they are up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shots.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin. The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Measles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.

NJDOH recommends that anyone who visited the following location, only during the specified date and times, may have been exposed to measles:

Location: Newark Liberty International Airport, Terminals B & C
Date & Time: December 12, 2025, between 7:00 AM (Terminal B) and 7:00 PM (Terminal C)*
