New Jersey - Hospital officials say not ebola: Man, 35, evaluated for ebola after being sick on plane, daughter also accompanying - possible travelers

Health officials were called to Newark Liberty International Airport to meet a plane on the runway Saturday, after a passenger began vomiting while en route from Brussels, officials said.
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were on their way to meet the plane Saturday afternoon after it landed at Gate 54, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The plane, United Flight 990, was carrying 255 people.

The incident comes amid concerns that the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa could be spread by international travelers. The first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States went to a Dallas hospital last week but was mistakenly sent home, despite revealing he was visiting from Liberia. U.S. health care officials have said the American health system is equipped to prevent an outbreak in the U.S.
The CDC and United Airlines did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.:tiphat: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/loca...Plane-Carrying-Sick-Passenger--278121131.html

United 990 intended destination was SFO per Flight Aware. Another news source said the grounded flight is United 988.

The second source partially states: ....."United flight 998 from Brussels landed at Newark Airport and has been met by Centers for Disease Control officials based in Newark after passengers on board, believed to be from Liberia, exhibited possible signs of Ebola.......".

However, 1st reports so often contain errors, I'll get concerned when we hear confirmation.

Watch the de-contamination efforts that will now ensue after EVD passengers have been sick inflight.

Or if like in Dallas: watch the decontamination that DOES NOT take place.

It will be informative to see how long the tests take, and whether they quarantine the passengers & crew until hopefully the tests come back negative.

BTW - United 988 came from Frankfurt, per Flight Aware. Gotta be suspect of early news reports.

Brussels Air needs to shut it down. Now.
If the tests are negative, then perhaps they can resume their flights, but this is just not acceptable.

Dani: Profits may force airlines to change - if you were an international traveller, wouldn't you check all the earlier connections for your flight? Would you board a plane that had just come from EVOB area?

I wonder if airline liability carriers will also start refusing to cover some flights. Elsewhere, a report said the cost to treat one ebola patient in the US is $315,000 - then add quarantine expenses, decontamination expenses, etc. Liablity concerns may dictate that they make a better good-faith effort to protect passengers.

LOL, I certainly intend to, since I'm traveling to Europe this month.

I'm sure that that will be the end result of all of this. But, that will take a few days and it would be nice if they would do the responsible thing without being forced to by their shareholders. They are hiding behind the CDC's statement regarding air travel, quoting them chapter and verse.

Currently, Brussels Air is a vector.

The timing of this is interesting given that a United Airlines plane carried an ebola patient exactly 2 weeks ago from Brussels. Was the passenger on an outbound flight 2 weeks ago from Dulles to Brussels, maybe the passenger sat in the same seat as Duncan. Maybe this passenger flies into the US every Saturday morning. Maybe he just had motion sickness. Maybe he was inbound from Liberia. Time will tell.

The interesting thing is that (if reports are to be believed) it is the CDC who went to retrieve them. I remember when the CDC mobilized for Dallas, it was before the patient was reported as testing positive, and I thought "Uh oh."

The timing of this is interesting ......... maybe the passenger sat in the same seat as Duncan. Maybe this passenger flies into the US every Saturday morning. ........

Remember, "the CDC says" EBOV isn't contagious until the patient is showing symptoms, so we can assume Duncan's situation didn't deposit virons on the plane surfaces.

Exactly. Its confusing. I think the fastest test is 4 hours PCR assay. (Could be wrong) Not sure they even had time to do that. Am guessing the reporting is muddled somehow.

They say the passengers don't have Ebola, but I'm wondering how they can get the tests back so quickly:

Perhaps they tested positive quickly for an alternative diagnosis. Malaria and influenza can both be diagnosed quickly, in some cases.

Of course, they would want to rule out a co-infection....

Ebola Outbreak: Japan Develops 30-Minute 'Simpler' Test To Quickly Diagnose Deadly Virus

......Yasuda and his team at the university have reportedly created what they called a "primer,” which magnifies only those genes specific to Ebola found in a blood sample or any other fluid in the body. If Ebola is present, the action of the primers distinguishes DNA specific to the deadly virus in 30 minutes.

Currently, a technique called polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, is being used to detect the Ebola virus. The PCR method takes up to two hours as doctors need to heat and cool the blood samples repeatedly to complete the procedure.....

CDC guidance on EBOV testing

U.S. clinical laboratories can safely handle specimens from PUI for EVD by following all required laboratory precautions and practices as specified in 29 CFR 1910.1030 for bloodborne pathogens
Any person collecting specimens from a PUI for EVD should wear gloves, fluid-resistant or impermeable gowns, full face shield or goggles, and masks to cover all of nose and mouth.
Personnel who process and perform laboratory testing on specimens from a PUI for EVD should wear gloves, fluid-resistant or impermeable gowns, full face shield or goggles, and masks to cover all of nose and mouth AND use a certified Class II biosafety cabinet or Plexiglass splash guard. If a certified Class II biosafety cabinet or Plexiglass splash guard is not available, a full face shield should be worn instead of goggles.
Anyone collecting specimens from a patient should follow the procedures included in this document for transporting specimens through the healthcare facility and clean-up of spills.

CDC Officials Meet Flight After Passenger Shows Possible Ebola Symptoms

.....A senior federal official said the passenger was exbihiting "flu-like symptoms."

According to an official briefed on the situation, preliminary information was that the passenger was vomiting on flight but did not display most of the other symptoms......

After they were off the plane and it was determined he was not contagious, the rest of the passengers were allowed off,.....
