Avian Flu Outbreak Closes Lord Stirling Park Trails and Others in NJ
SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – Reminder! As of early March 2026, trails at the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, NJ, are closed to the public until further notice due to an active, localized outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) affecting wild bird populations. The building remains open, but visitors must avoid handling or approaching sick/dead birds.
Key Details Regarding the Closure: Location: Environmental Education Center (Lord Stirling Park) and other Somerset County Park Commission locations, including Duke Island Park. As of March 7 trails at Duke Island Park trails have reopened, but the Raritan River Greenway trails remain closed due to flooding.
Reason: Increased bird mortality, primarily affecting Canada geese, due to confirmed HPAI (bird flu).
Status: Trails are closed, but building hours are maintained.
Safety Advice: The Somerset County Park Commission advises keeping pets leashed and away from water/dead birds, and avoiding walking on frozen water.
