Two New H1N1-Related Deaths Reported

STATE?New Jersey reported two new H1N1-related deaths to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week.

They are:
? A 58-year-old Morris County female with underlying medical conditions. She was hospitalized on Dec. 9, 2009, and died the next day.
? A 24-year-old Middlesex female with underlying conditions. She was hospitalized on Dec. 31, 2009 and died Jan. 6, 2010.

During week 10, 0.79% of sentinel provider patient visits were due to ILI. These data reflect reports from fourteen (20%) of the 70 enrolled sentinel providers. During week 9, 1.80% of sentinel provider patient visits were due to ILI. These data reflect reports from twenty-one (30%) of the 70 enrolled sentinel providers.

The mean daily percentage of ED visits for ILI during the week ending 03/20/10 was 3.7%, compared to 3.3% for the previous week. The mean percentage of ED visits due to ILI ranged from 3.2% to 4.1% during 03/14/10 - 03/20/10. The mean percentage of ED visits due to ILI (averaged over the previous four influenza seasons) for this same week (MMWR Week 11) was approximately 5%.

1.06% ILI was reported statewide from long term care facilities. This is an
increase compared to the previous week (0.55%).

Schools reported 5.01% absenteeism. This is an increase compared to the
previous week (4.28%). The percent absenteeism for each county ranged from 3.37 to 7.42%.

3.49% of ILI was reported statewide from emergency departments. This is an
increase compared to the previous week (3.47%). The percent ILI for each county ranged from
0.00 to 18.46%.

Sentinel ILI decreases

During week 10, 3.20% of all deaths reported by the vital statistics offices in 6 New Jersey cities (i.e., Camden, Elizabeth, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, Trenton) were due to pneumonia or influenza. This is a decrease compared to the previous week (6.56%). The percentage of death due to pneumonia or influenza for this same week last year was 5.00%.

School absenteeism: During week 13, schools reported 6.18% absenteeism. This is an increase compared to the previous week (4.36%). The percent absenteeism for each county ranged from 1.35 to 10.50%. The percent absent for this same week last year was 4.35%. The percent absenteeism for the northeast (9.76%) public health region was found to be at or above the state baseline (5.73%).

Emergency depts: During week 13, 3.85% of ILI was reported statewide from emergency departments. This is an increase compared to the previous week (3.32%). The percent ILI for each county ranged from 0.43 to 15.98%. The percent ILI for this same week last year was 3.74% in emergency departments. The percent ILI for the northwest (8.15%), central west (6.23%) and central east (4.47%) public health regions were found to be above the state baseline (3.04%).
